Yes, I'm one of those guys who wait in line the day a shiny new gadget goes on sale, and the iPhone 3G is one of the shiniest gadgets of all. But while I'll be out there waiting in the wee hours of July 11 (it's my job, after all), the rest of you should think twice before losing sleep on launch day. Here's why.
1. Shortages are unlikely
Remember last year, when we all got in line early for the iPhone because we were afraid it would sell out? Well, that didn't quite happen. Yes, individual AT&T stores sold out quickly, but many Apple stores had plenty of iPhones in stock in the days and weeks after the big day. (Indeed, there weren’t any serious iPhone 1.0 shortages until just recently.) Also, word of hundreds of massive overseas shipments bound for Apple (which began arriving as early as March) leads me to believe that there's a healthy supply of iPhone 3Gs on hand. So if you're worrying about a Wii-like shortage of the iPhone 3G, well ... I wouldn't. [Update: Clearly, I couldn't have been more wrong about this one.]
2. Chaos on Day One
Unlike last year, customers won't be able to activate their new iPhones over iTunes—instead, clerks will have to activate them in the store, contracts will have to be signed on the spot, and new AT&T subscribers will have to undergo credit checks. It could take a good 10-15 minutes per customer—and that's if things go smoothly. It'll be a new process for everyone—especially for Apple Store employees, who aren't accustomed to processing cell phone contracts—so I'm anticipating (dreading, actually) a train wreck next Friday. Even if you're dying to lay hands on the iPhone 3G, you might want to wait a week or so until they get the kinks worked out.
3. 32GB iPhone 3G on the horizon
I was keenly disappointed when Steve Jobs didn't unveil a 32GB iPhone last month—indeed, all we got were 8GB and 16GB versions, and I'd personally like an iPhone that I could cram with as much music and video as I can stand. Here's the thing, though—a 32GB iPhone 3G is probably coming within the next six months, if not sooner (well, that's my guess). If I wasn't buying the 16GB iPhone 3G for Yahoo! Tech, I'd probably sit tight and wait for the 32GB version to arrive.
4. Best new iPhone features are coming to the original iPhone
Yes, the iPhone 3G will be getting GPS and, of course, 3G—but for now, you can't download music tracks over AT&T's 3G network or access AT&T's streaming video service. For me, the most exciting thing about the new iPhone is the upcoming App Store, which will be stocked with scores of 3D games, chat clients, productivity apps, RSS readers, you name it—and the App Store will be available July 11 as a free upgrade to the old iPhone. That'll keep you busy till the 32GB iPhone comes out.
5. The HTC Touch Diamond
I've seen the future of cell phones, folks, and it's called the HTC Touch Diamond. With its gorgeous VGA screen, beautiful touch-screen interface, and compact, light-weight shell, the Diamond is the first phone to make me green-eyed with envy since … well, since the original iPhone. The Diamond is set to arrive in the U.S. in September, and spy shots of a Sprint-branded Touch Diamond are already circulating on the Web. You might want to give the Diamond a serious look before committing to a new two-year iPhone contract.

People Puuuuhhhhlllleeze!!! It's just a phone. You call. You get calls. You talk and then hang up. No big deal. Whomever convinced you otherwise is pulling your chain, or your really do need a hug. Either way, your all wwwwaaaaayyyy better than that!
I heard that the "old" version rather, the "first" version of the iPhone is better to get if one doesn't want a lot of memory due to the lower price of ATT "monthly' charges. I was told today that this "new" version may cost less initially, but it makes up for it in ATT monthly charges and that accumulates through the years! ANY BODY KNOW WhAT IS ACCURATE OUT THERE! If my plan is a bit lower with the "old" iPhone, where to heck can I get my hands on an old version? Amazon? Ebay? Thanks if you can help me! Z
When will I be able to go to night school at my nearest college to learn how to turn it on ?
Ok, I've read enough of these comments. The Iphone isn't perfect and it does not have every feature, but what it does it does the best. Go read some reviews on cnet.com about the various phones. For what I want in a phone the iphone is it period. Hang the cost, I was waiting for gps. I don't care about 3g its not in my area anyway. I'll still be paying the same thing a month for the at&t tilt that I had(It broke, but great phone) Oh yeah, I was going to buy the first gen even though it doesn't have a-gps, but the phones are going from 500-650$ on ebay, so screw that. Don't wait just sell it when a new one comes out. You will still be able to get your money back anyway. It's not just phone it's the best gps, mp3, mobile web browser all rolled into one. So yeah its expensive.
I send pix on my iphone all the time, so where r u getting this wrong info about it? video no, but pix yes
The Tilt battery was kinda lacking, so I upgraded to a 2600mAh battery that has twice the capacity of the OEM battery. Can't do that with an iPhone.
I phone ruls !
oh yeah, how many of you have had to replace a battery in a phone? Just buy it.
hey if i was to get an i phone the onlly reasons would be 1.internet acces and 2.to play the new upcoming electronic arts TM game SPORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! p.s. spore is going to be the number one best game ever and forever throughout the universe and all parallel dimensions
HI BEN, THE I PHONE WILL BE THE BEST IF NOKIA DISAPPEAR, I THINK YOU NEVER HEAR ABOUT, BECAUSE IF YOU DID YOU SHOULD NOT BE SAYING THAT. CHECK THE NEW NOKIA N96 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN WAITING SINCE FEB. AND SOME OF THEM HAD ALREADY BEEN LOST THEIR MONEY FOR A N96 CLONE SPENDING MORE THAN $1000 FOR IT, CHECK IT YOU MAY CHANGE YOU MIND ,,,, A 16GB FLASH MEM+MEM CARD, GPS, WIFI, LIVE TV, AND MORE,,,,
It's the best toy out there. Might not be the best for business users, but what do I care; I actually hope not many people go buy it on the first day, so I don't have to wait very long. Iphone Rocks!
I prefer not to worship gadgets and such. I sort of think the phone is a tool that's meant to serve me and not the opposite. You on the other hand seem to build your life on "things" and that's fine; I have things too. But what you lack is the ability to know what's really important, and a phone of any kind is not. What's is important are those people you talk to on your phone. But then, since you are, obviously, a charter member of the "gemme" generation, you can't help it. You are a product of the corporate world and that's sad.
RIM still sells most of its devices to corporate users. Yet in the most recent quarter, about 1.3 million units, or 34 percent of the total, went to what RIM calls "non-enterprise" customers--small businesses or consumers buying a BlackBerry for themselves. That alone amounts to more BlackBerrys than the 1.1 million iPhones Apple sold in the same period.
Just buy the LG DARE from Verizon.... its hella better than the iphone and can do more anyways....
I do not understand the part about the "spy shots" of HTC Touch Diamond. It is already available in Europe so on the website of HTC as well :) http://www.htc.com/europe/product.aspx?id=46638
Nokia n96 looks pretty cool. When that comes out i'll take a look at it.

It can not even do everything a blackberry or Trio can do or Palm No Savvy business person would switch to this right away. you can't hook it up to a network yet. I agree its going to take years before apple can get up to those standards. It is a nice showoff phone if your into that.
