At last, I have the new iPhone in my hot little hands—and yes, it's plenty fast, feels relatively thin and light, and does a solid job of pinpointing your location. But is the iPhone 3G blowing me away like its predecessor did? Check out my first impressions.
Out of the box, the iPhone 3G looks almost exactly the same as its predecessor, although turn it around and you'll find the black, glossy backing. As expected, the new back panel smudges like crazy. No scratches yet, but I've only had the new iPhone in my possession for an hour or so—give me time.
Thanks to its clever tapered design, the iPhone 3G actually feels a little thinner than the original—although as I've written before, the new iPhone is actually about 0.02 inches thicker at its thickest point. Still, the iPhone 3G is about 0.1 ounces lighter than the iPhone 2.5G, and holding both of them in my hands, I definitely prefer the feel of the 3G model.
Turn the iPhone 3G on and, well, it looks just like the iPhone of old, save the changes in the 2.0 firmware. Up in the left-hand corner of the screen, though, is the telltale "3G" icon (which you'll see anytime you're in an AT&T 3G service area), and boy, it makes a difference.
I ran a few quick tests with the iPhone 3G and my 2.5G iPhone side-by-side, and the new iPhone blows away the old when it comes to surfing. The giant New York Times home page takes almost a minute and a half to load on my old EDGE iPhone; on the iPhone 3G, it took just 25 seconds. Running some speed tests, I got 420Kbps download speeds on average; the iPhone 2.5G only managed about 160Kbps.
In terms of GPS, I'm getting decent results, but nothing mind-blowing so far. The iPhone 3G managed to pinpoint my location to within a third of a city block—not bad, but my old iPhone could do that too. I'll conduct more testing today and report back. Update: I just took a walk around my block using GPS. I got a good signal, which turns the "current location" crosshairs icon into a solid, pulsating blue dot, which managed to trail me by about 10-15 seconds as I strolled down the sidewalk (with occassional phantom detours into the odd backyard). Now that's a trick the old iPhone can't do; make no mistake, though, it's no substitute for a dashboard GPS system, or at least not so far.
So, overall, how am I feeling after spending barely an hour with the new iPhone? I love the speedy surfing, but other than that, it still feels like the same old iPhone in a slightly sexier case. Will my impression will change in the next day or so, especially once I get GPS fully up and running? We'll see.
I'll be posting a full review tomorrow, so stay tuned. And in the meantime, feel free to post your questions below, and I'll cover as many as I can in a follow-up post.

CAN IT BE UNLOCK SO IT CAN BE USE WITH OTHER CARRIERS????? I AM SO DYING FOR THIS PHONE BUT I REALLY DONT LIKE AT&T SERVICE?? WOULD IT WORK WITH ANOTHER COMPANY??
I'm just wondering, do they have an app for the iphone that lets the user know, on an ever growing scale, how much larger their ego is compared to that of a regular person? Also, I heard that the phone can detect exactly what each user is overcompensating for. Is that true?
It should be mentionted that apple and at&t are unprepared for customers. Given the hype i find that hard to believe. I waited in line for 6 hours and 9 hours later the phone is still not activated. AT&t feels that is ok to mistreat customers . They dont feel like it will affect their buisness when they lose customers, BUYER BEWARE!!!
The new iPhone is terriffic. Too bad that they had to involve at&t. The cell phone companies involvement will kill the iPhone. Why couldn't it have been like the first iPhone set up where you didn't need to go to an at&t store. If you currently have an iPhone and want a new one at&t charges you through the nose, for activation fee, upgrade fee, a new contract, more money for text messages and more money for the cell plan. WHY WOULD A CURRENT iPhonE USER WANT TO TRADE UP TO A NEW ONE AND HAVE TO PAY at&t AN ADDITIONAL $600 A YEAR???????
people please take the time to type and spell correctly, proper grammar would not hurt either. Is that asking too much?? However, thanks for posting your comments/questions.
Hi, Do you know if iPhone 3G can enter a wi fi network that uses WEP password number 2 3 or 4. Because I have an iTouch and I could not find the way to make it work with WiFi in my house unless I put back the password to WEP number 1. The reason I ask is because I am thinking on buying an iPhone and I think this detail is very important.
AT&T did not subsidized their new costumers that applied ahead of time and try to exchange the phone they gave to be used until the iphone release. Instead they charge the costumers $499 for 16 gig and $399 for the 8 gig. The manager said that the extra moneyy paid MIGHT be later credited to the monthly bill. When is it? It depends on AT&T's vice president that will personally review the accounts. This is only one of the bad things people, I, experience after waiting in line the whole night.
why do you have to pay 69.99 for the 450 minutes plan? With my old iPhone I only had to pay 59.99 a month.

How can I get into the new Iphone if my contract is not up. Are they offering the price to existing customers?
What about the upgraded speakers? They are supposed to sound way better than the old iphone..

Is the SPEAKER ON THE NEW IPHONE any louder than the original iphone because the speaker volume on the iphone is very quiet.
hello iphone fans, as everyone does, i love my iphone too and here in dubai everyone is jealous coz its not out here yet, i got mine from the states. The only thing that frustrates me a bit is that i can't create folders for my received messages (compared to Nokia phones), as u know u get messages sometimes that u wana keep, and also u cant forward messages to others either. Anothing thing is no video recorder. Other than that, im quite still happy, i jst wish i can do those features as well.
Is it possible to receive picture messages from other wireless company users? Is it now possible to forward messages that have been received now? Is it possible to send a picture taken from an IPhone to another wireless company users phone to appear as a text/picture message? Thanks for your work.
With the current UNAVAILABILITY of the iPhone, are they going to extend the exchange date for those of us who purchased after May 26 and are eligible for the upgrade at a restocking chage only?
