Touchscreens, facial recognition systems, and gesture-based interfaces could spell the end of the humble computer mouse sooner than you might think, or so a Gartner analyst predicts. Mouse manufacturers (not to mention millions of desktop users) beg to differ.
Analyst Steve Prentice told BBC News that while the "mouse works fine in the desktop environment ... for home entertainment or working on a notebook, it's over."
That's a bold statement, given that the mouse-cursor combo has been making our lives easier for decades (the mouse itself was invented nearly 40 years ago)—and when it comes to a desktop PC, a mouse (as Prentice admits) does, indeed, work "fine."
But the Gartner analysts points to the popularity of the gesture-based Wiimote, the iPhone's touchscreen UI and tilt-sensitive accelerometers, and even the wireless axe in Guitar Hero as evidence that consumers are moving beyond the mouse.
Now, Prentice doesn't go so far as to kiss off the venerable keyboard, too. "For all its faults, the keyboard will remain the primary text input device," he told the BBC. Thank goodness for that.
However, "the idea of a keyboard with a mouse as a control interface is the paradigm that I am talking about breaking down," Prentice said.
Just tell that to mouse maker Logitech. "The death of the mouse is greatly exaggerated," a Logitech exec told the BBC, adding that the company has sold a whopping 500 million mice in the past two decades.
What do you think? Would you ever ditch your mouse for, say, a touch-sensitive PC monitor, or Minority Report-level gesture tech? Or will they have to pry your mouse from your cold, dead fingers?

Not a chance - the mouse is cheap, easy to use, reliable, easily replaceable in case of malfunction or if you just want a new one, wireless, fast, and has enough buttons now to handle most tasks (scrolling, selecting, navigating, etc.) without moving your hand much. The new types of input devices certainly have their uses, but until we get cheap, reliable eye tracking devices or ones that read your mind, the mouse isn't going away. And I don't think either of those will be available anytime soon.
I'll take the holo-gesture computer any day.
I'd love a "Minority Report" - style interface. I do a lot of CAD work, and it would be GREAT to have as rich and controllable interface as Tom Cruise's character did.
I'd ditch a mouse....But to be honest, I don't think they'll ever go extinct. It's a popular product, and I think they'll always be sold seperately if not with the computer.
ok, theyre pryin my mouse from my hand cuz i for one am a bit lazy and the simple wrist movement that it takes to move the mouse is soooo much nicer than the touch screen interface which requires a lot of movement. i mean seriously. the mouse is the most convieniant way to do things. the wiimote is really nothing more than a fancy wireless mouse. im sure theres some sorta technology that makes it special but think about it- its the same basic idea. now if they make a device that can read my thoughts so all i have to do is think- forward, back, next, etc then ill give up my mouse but until then no huge touchscreens for me.
I've been waiting tables off and on for the past 25 yrs. Over the past ten or twelve years, touch screens have been pretty much the restaurant industry standard. Double-edged sword, though: The order gets to the kitchen super quick... but it BETTER be EXACTLY correct. And the waiter has to walk much faster because the technology allows for quicker turn-over of orders to the tables. Even as I play with my very first wireless mouse, I'm salivating over being able to get one of the touch screen phones! I can't wait to be wired and untethered to pressing tiny buttons. I'm NOT a big, tall dude, but I have meaty hands. My current cellphone annoys me when attempting to enter info or data. Those touch screen phones look YUMMY! Mouse for the desktop is cool for now. Next year I want a flat screen touchscreen for my computer, all my own.
Why would I want finger prints all over my screen?
Why is it always implied that the iphone was the first touchscreen based device?
I think the moue on't become extinct any time soon. They will have to come up with something a lot better.
What's a mouse? My first laptop had a track ball, and all subsequent ones had track pads.
ANYTHING THAT WOULD MAKE INFO INPUT A WHOLE LIKE BETTER. IF THAT MEAN REPLACING THE MOUSE AND OR THE KEYBOARD.
40 years? It was invented in 1963, but sure didn't show up on desks in large numbers until the mid-80s. I still remember my brother making fun of me for having a mouse and Windows 3.0 in the mid-80's. It's really been more like 25 years. Still, a long I
for some reason i knew that this would happen at some point or another. honestly i think it was abbout time the mouse had to go, not completely, but as an option on computers and laptop. i have a laptop and im just fine with the touchpad.
that was dumb as heck, the writer just trying to make money, your screen would get mess up or damage, screen repairs cost an arm and a leg, as far as voice interface, forget it, listen to the narrator in accessories, the automated phone service is better than that, and that was made for the blind, gee, i'm even more blinded listening to that.
I would love to see more touch screen and voice recognition. I think it would increase productivity, however, the keyboard is something that may take alot more persuasion to make me give up. I just don't prefer voice recognition typing over typing myself. Who needs mice??? If there is touch screen capabilities possible.
that is just too sad the mouse has been around for a long time you cant replace or destroy people really love and like for laptops i can understand the whole touchpad thing but when it comes to taking away the mouse from the desktop people will go mad the desktop has always had a mouse i dont think anyone including me wants to hold some wiimote or remote in the air i like the comfort of holding it on the desk and having a touchscreen YUCK fingerprints all over the screen people who don't wash their hands ect.. the tech world is not ready to give up the mouse its too precious and really convenient so please disagree or reply if you think otherwise
Perhaps in some places the mouse will be gone. At home I have used a laptop for the past 2+ years and have an usb mouse. There are times when I just want to chill and surf via mouse. LONG LIVE THE MOUSE!!!
Had a pc tablet w/ touch screen and it was a waste of time. The mouse is so much more efficient. Just a small distance displacement and you cover the whole screen with great precision. All this other stuff is big corp business marketing hype. Good for the whole marketing industry but nonsense.
I read through all the current posts and no one has yet touched on my objection to the predicted death of the mouse: now that I have to use a touchscreen at my bank's ATM I have discovered how very difficult it is - especially for anyone with carpal tunnel which has become more and more common. I haven't used a mouse in years because one has to move the shoulder too much. It's trackball with wheel for me - permanently!

Iv always been better at using a mouse in games rather then a controller, you can aim more precisly
