Paramount: Replace our DVDs with Blu-ray, get $10 back

The movie studio really, really wants to you to upgrade your old Paramount titles from DVD to Blu-ray—so much so that it's willing to give you a ten spot for your trouble.

High-Def Digest reports that Transformers, due to go Blu on September 2, will be the first title eligible for the $10 mail-in rebate.

Also set for the rebate are upcoming Blu-ray titles such as the complete Godfather trilogy (due September 23), Sweeney Todd, Old School, Stardust, and Zodiac. Hopefully, more will be on the way.

The offer is good for either the DVD or HD DVD versions of selected titles—good news for me, as I'm thinking of trading in my HD DVD version of the Zodiac director's cut.

A few caveats, according to High-Def Digest: You'll only get a $10 rebate on selected Paramount Blu-rays, not all of them (keep an eye out for the telltale disc insert). You'll also have to mail in the proof-of-purchase labels from both the DVDs and Blu-rays in question (let's hope they're easily detachable, so as not to mar the keep case), and you'll have to buy your Blu-rays before December 31, 2009 and postmark your rebate envelope before January 31, 2010.

It's a welcome gesture on the part of Paramount—indeed, the other big studios would be well-advised to jump on the Blu-ray rebate bandwagon.

Still, Paramount's rebate offer brings up a sore subject—the inordinately high list prices for Blu-ray movies in general, often as high as $39 for new releases and $29 for catalog titles. Why can't we get those prices knocked down by, oh, say ... ten bucks or so?

Anyway, what do you think—would a $10 rebate make you more likely to replace your DVDs (or HD DVDs, for that matter) with Blu-rays, or would you be just as happy keeping your old discs?

Add in the high price of Blu-ray players and it's an even more sore subject regarding upgrades from DVD. I'm plenty happy with my DVDs (not having purchased a Blu-ray player). I'll probably end up going away from hard copies to digital streaming anyway - esp with the Netflix/360 merger this fall.

or , , , they could lower the average price to around twenty dollars across the board . . . then i'd take the plunge . . . i have 300 to 400 dvd's as it is that provide excellent upconverted video and sound quality . . . as it stands right now . . . the cost still greatly exceeds the upgrade benefits . . .

For $39 I can take the wife out to the movies and splurge with popcorn and drinks and still have money left over. The only way I will start buying Blue-ray is if they drop the price to $20.

Isn't that great that now that they have won the format war, they can't even sell Blueray players at the rate they were hoping for!? Now they have to give incentives for people to make the leap. Poor judgement in not making the prices reasonable for the masses. Interesting enough, after they won the format war, they decided to not release the licensing to other manufactures to make Blueray players less expensive. Maybe because they had the corner on the market?
