That's got to be some kind of record, right? Too bad that CNN managed to break the Biden story before all those text messages went out.
According to Nielsen Mobile (by way of the L.A. Times technology blog), a whopping 2.9 million U.S. cell phone users got the promised text message from the Obama campaign, notifying them that Sen. Joe Biden would be joining the presumptive nominee on the Democratic presidential ticket.
Nearly three million recipients, eh? That's a lot of numbers to cram into the "To:" field. Indeed, Obama's VP text message campaign probably counts as the biggest SMS-powered stunt in history—although compared to the 48 billion text messages sent every month, it's only a drop in the overall bucket.
Of course, as the L.A. Times points out, many of those who signed up for the text alert already knew that Sen. Obama had picked Biden as his VP. The culprit? The dastardly MSM (mainstream media), which managed to break the story late Friday, hours before the official text messages went out.
While eager Obama fans might have been disappointed by the tardy VP SMS messages, the experiment was a huge success for the Obama camp, which ended up gathering about, oh, 2.9 million mobile numbers for potential supporters.
So if you're bummed that Obama's text message got to you a little late, don't worry—you'll be hearing from him again, I promise.

Osama I mean Obama is a loser who cares.
I'm with Alexgannis. This is interesting because of the tech milestone but Obama is at best an empty suit and at worst he is a socialist who will destroy this nation if elected.
@rorbincalendar: at least he can't do as bad as bush. i never signed up to get the text, but i'm sure i would have heard about it anyway. I think biden is a good choice.
