SanDisk 16GB microSD cards on tap, in time for the G1

Bummed that the Android-powered T-Mobile G1 will only ship with a 1GB microSD card? Well, never fear—it looks like you'll soon be able to upgrade the G1's memory to iPhone 3G levels.

MobileCrunch reports that the new, 16GB microSDHC card will arrive in October—just in time for the G1, which boasts a microSD expansion slot. That means you'll be able to expand the G1's memory to match the top-of-the-line iPhone 3G—and even better, you can swap out multiple 16GB cards if that suits your fancy.

T-Mobile only promised support for up to 8GB of microSD memory on the G1, but as MobileCrunch and others have noted, SanDisk's new 16GB card should work on any device that takes a 4 or 8GB microSDHC card, including the G1.

Of course, the new card ain't cheap; at $99.99 (a $129.99 16GB M2 chip will also ship next month), the tiny, barely half-a-gram memory card costs more than its weight in gold. Still, a new G1 plus the 16GB card will only cost you $279, compared to $299 for the 16GB iPhone 3G.

So, I'm curious: Any T-Mobile G1 fence-sitters swayed now that a 16GB microSD card is on the way?

Does anyone else feel like on-board memory for media players, PDAs, and phones feels a little outdated? I'd rather pick my device for it's features than for it's amount of memory. One or two SD or microSD slots would take care of about any amount of storage you'd need and could increase as prices on these cards drop, keeping the device relevant alot longer. I guess they make more money selling them with built-in memory, though.

^ Agreed. I've always wondered the same thing. Two 2gb chips cost less than 1 4gb chips a lot of the times, so it would even be cheaper for the consumer. arghhh i don't think it'll ever happen though

In response to 1 and 2, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that adding another slot would not only cost too much to be worth it for the manufacturer, but also it is unlikely that there would be enough space in the case of the phone. So 2 2gb chips may cost $20 less, but the added hardware and redesign might cost them $20 per phone, and they would charge that $30 to make it worth their while. But they couldn't make the phones bigger or thicker because we need them as small as possible.... And if you have music on 2 different cards, you likely wouldn't be able to access songs from both cards in the same playlist or play all songs across the 2 cards, which would be annoying to most people. It's a good concept, but 4gb cards can be found for $20- what's wrong with that price?

With a phone / media device that stores mp3's and / or videos, I can see having a 16GB card, but not for a digital camera. I went on a week long trip to Vegas, snapping tons of pictures (even 2 videos) with my 6MP camera, and did not fill a 2GB card. If SD flash tech is fast enough and big enough, these new HD camcorders could do away with those battery draining hard drives and just save your home movies to the SD card. Doesn't even need to be micro-SD yet. But, with micro, we could see small flip-style cell phone sized full HD camcorders within 5 years.

I want a phone with 120gb built in because I have 103GB of music and I don't want to have to carry a phone and mp3 player... If I could get a phone with a card slot which holds 120gb cards I would be happy... I also want a 5mp camera and waterproofing and 3g or other highspeed net... activex support and java support and full integration with surveillance systems and pvr's... and lastly a traffic light hack which allows me to get aLL green lights
