T-Mobile: G1 already sold out, still taking pre-orders

Despite tripling the number of units available for the G1's October 22 launch date, the carrier has already "sold through them all," although current T-Mobile customers can still place a pre-order.

According to a T-Mobile spokesperson, the carrier will keep taking pre-orders through Oct. 21 for "delivery at a later date"; no official word on exactly what "later" means, although Matthew Miller at ZDNet pegs November 10 as the likely shipping date. Keep in mind, however, that you must be an existing T-Mobile customer to place a pre-order; everyone else will have to wait until October 22, when the G1 officially goes on sale.

Meanwhile, Gizmodo reports that a "pretty full-featured" emulator for the G1 went online over the weekend; however, the last time I clicked on the link, all I got was a "403 Forbidden" error. Ugh.

Anyway, here's the full statement from T-Mobile RE: G1 availability:

Given the great anticipation and the heavy pre-sale demand for the T-Mobile G1 with Google, we nearly tripled the number of phones initially available for delivery on our Oct. 22 launch date, and have sold through them all.  However, to accommodate additional T-Mobile customers who want to pre-order a device, they now have the opportunity to place a pre-order through Oct. 21, for delivery at a later date.
Also, people can still pre-register on the T-Mobile G1 Web site to be notified prior to launch where they can purchase the device beginning Oct. 22.  Details are available on the T-Mobile G1 Web site, www.T-MobileG1.com.

Frankly, given all the comments and e-mails I've received about the G1 (check out my hands-on impressions), I'm not all that surprised to learn that T-Mobile's already burned through its initial shipment of handsets. Indeed, here are the two comments I hear most often about the G1: "It's ugly" and "I want one." I'd be shocked if the G1 doesn't make for one of the biggest phone launches of the year, second only to the iPhone 3G.

So, just curious: Who out there's already placed a pre-order for the G1? And who's still in wait-and-see mode?

After my Bb Pearl died a couple of months ago and while waiting for the Curve to drop in price, I got itchy and went to buy a phone. I saw the G1 and it seemed to make better sense to me. I pre-ordered Oct.2 with out even being aware of any hype until I called customer service to verify my order. Only then did I learn how smart and lucky I was to place the order THAT DAY. I am a gmail subscriber and heavy Google services user. This phone feels just right for me. - nm

Too bad your G1 dosnt have 3g internet, have fun waiting on your slow download speeds! Sorry iphone is much better and faster, not to mention AT&T is the only carrier with rollover minutes. While your waiting for your pages to load with your slow carrier and waisting money on minutes you don't use, I will be watching cool movies on my iphone and saving money!

I preorderd mine early so I should be getting those from the first batch I hope. Im kinda bummed it wouldn't let me preorder a white one but hey its cool at least im still getting one. Im glad they are adding my area to the 3G network if it wasn't for that I would have held off getting one.

I pre-ordered mine last month, I'm not getting an iphone because I don't care for apple's software policy. I haven't had a problem with T-Mobile yet and I like their service so far.
