T-Mobile: G1 already sold out, still taking pre-orders

Despite tripling the number of units available for the G1's October 22 launch date, the carrier has already "sold through them all," although current T-Mobile customers can still place a pre-order.

According to a T-Mobile spokesperson, the carrier will keep taking pre-orders through Oct. 21 for "delivery at a later date"; no official word on exactly what "later" means, although Matthew Miller at ZDNet pegs November 10 as the likely shipping date. Keep in mind, however, that you must be an existing T-Mobile customer to place a pre-order; everyone else will have to wait until October 22, when the G1 officially goes on sale.

Meanwhile, Gizmodo reports that a "pretty full-featured" emulator for the G1 went online over the weekend; however, the last time I clicked on the link, all I got was a "403 Forbidden" error. Ugh.

Anyway, here's the full statement from T-Mobile RE: G1 availability:

Given the great anticipation and the heavy pre-sale demand for the T-Mobile G1 with Google, we nearly tripled the number of phones initially available for delivery on our Oct. 22 launch date, and have sold through them all.  However, to accommodate additional T-Mobile customers who want to pre-order a device, they now have the opportunity to place a pre-order through Oct. 21, for delivery at a later date.
Also, people can still pre-register on the T-Mobile G1 Web site to be notified prior to launch where they can purchase the device beginning Oct. 22.  Details are available on the T-Mobile G1 Web site, www.T-MobileG1.com.

Frankly, given all the comments and e-mails I've received about the G1 (check out my hands-on impressions), I'm not all that surprised to learn that T-Mobile's already burned through its initial shipment of handsets. Indeed, here are the two comments I hear most often about the G1: "It's ugly" and "I want one." I'd be shocked if the G1 doesn't make for one of the biggest phone launches of the year, second only to the iPhone 3G.

So, just curious: Who out there's already placed a pre-order for the G1? And who's still in wait-and-see mode?

TMobile's phone selection is non-existent,everything they sell is over a year old techwise. Any talk of selling something that is state of the art or of some quality is going to get a buzz

I think you'll be waiting a while before this one is free..lol With this kinda buzz it won't be free until a new version comes out, and even then probably not..pre orders are selling on ebay for Hundreds of dollars. Like it or notr this is a major player. With the software even if it has bugs you will be able to just download upgrades for the phone e.g. Blackberry, so it's not necessary to "hold" off on buying one just because of "bugs".

I'd really like one, but I'm going to wait and see how things work out.

I'm still waiting for the Blackberry storm , iPhone 3G feels trash compared to the Storm . I would definitely trade my iPhone 3G for a Blackberry Storm , hands down .

Already pre-ordered it. It's not an iphone, but it's close, and already being a t-mobile customer, they finally got a phone that I really want, and is cool, so I went ahead and got it.

As a woman with finger nails, I am not able to type much with iPhone’s lack of keypad. So sold it off on eBay. With the full keypad and touch screen, Gphone is for me!

I am a t-mobile customer that has placed my preorder. I really don't like the "side kick look" of the G1. I do however like the touch feature but thats about it. I figure I'll play with it for a few days and if I don't like it I'll send it back...

I pre-order and cannot wait to get my phone. The fact the the OS is open source leaves open so many possibilites for this phone and future models. I currently use an HTC phone, the T-Mobile Dash. If the G-1 exceeds what I currently have, I'll be quite pleased.

I'm not excited about the new phone at all!! "sorry",I been through the sidekicks and with all the things built into them they have defects, customer service even admitted to it the phones can't hold all the options,so i gave up on the sidekicks and soon gonna just get the wing when the price goes down alot more!!!

Of Course the G-1 sold out. They only are going to make 5. The Google company want to strike up demand to make it seem that this is the most popular device out. Just in time for the Christmas Season.

not only do i have one on the orginal pre-order but the phone looks awesome. the andriod system makes it so much better then the iphone. not to mention the google aplications. best way to describe the "phone" to your friends....imagine if the sidekick and the iphone had a baby and it was raised bye google.
