After months of rumors, the Storm—the first-ever touchscreen BlackBerry—is finally official, and it's set for Verizon Wireless (exclusively, for now) later this fall. Read on for the details.

Verizon hasn't coughed up a hard-and-fast release date for the Storm—nor any pricing details, for that matter—but this much we do know: It'll pack in dual-mode CDMA and GSM radios for full-on world calling, 3G access (both EV-DO Rev. A and HSPA), GPS (along with turn-by-turn directions), Bluetooth (including the A2DP profile for stereo Bluetooth headsets), and a 3.2-megapixel camera with flash and autofocus.

Measuring 4.4 by 2.4 by 0.55 inches and weighing in at about 5.5 ounces, the Storm (which is also set to arrive in Europe through Vodafone) looks to be roughly the same size as an iPhone or the upcoming T-Mobile G1, so it should be reasonably pocketable.

The centerpiece, of course, will be the Storm's 480 by 360-pixel, 3.25-inch glass display, which will support multitouch (good for two-finger gestures, a la the iPhone). Even better, though, is a feature that RIM calls "ClickThrough": a design that lets you "distinctly feel the screen being pressed and released with a gentle click" for a "highly intuitive experience." Sounds promising, but whether the Storm's display actually delivers the tactile experience that's missing on the iPhone and the G1 remains to be seen (or felt, I guess); I look forward to trying it out in person. Update: Click here for initial ClickThrough impressions from the Web; so far, so good.

In addition to the multitouch display, the Storm will also come with an ambient light sensor, along with an accelerometer that'll automatically turn the screen when you hold the phone sideways. Speaking of which: When it comes to entering text, holding the Storm in a landscape view will give you a full QWERTY touch keypad, while in portrait mode you'll get a SureType keypad (or the same layout as on a BlackBerry Pearl).

Naturally, messaging will doubtless be one of the Storm's strong suits. Expect full-on BlackBerry e-mail support, complete with push e-mail and access to POP and IMAP e-mail servers. Also on board: SMS, picture and instant messaging.

The Storm will also come with full-on Office document editing—including support for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents—courtesy of DataViz Documents to Go. Of course, plenty of other BlackBerry applications are already available, and there's word that a branded BlackBerry store is on tap, similar to Apple's App Store and the Android Market.

Besides its 3.2MP camera, the Storm is set to arrive with full HTML Web browser (double-tap to zoom, tap and slide to scroll), a video and music player, with Verizon promising smooth, full-screen video playback. There's also a 3.5mm jack for your earphones, 1GB of internal storage, and a microSD expansion slot for another 16GB of flash memory.

All in all, sounds like a formidable package, although something's missing if you look carefully: Wi-Fi. Ugh.

So, what do you think? Likes and dislikes? Any guesses on the price? (I've heard $199 with a two-year contract, but that's not official.) Sound off below.

wifi would have been nice as most of us dont need gps when we have it in our cars or a portable nuvi.

Yea, okay. It sounds like EXACTLY what I want...Except that it doesn't have WiFi. So why buy it? I can get a PDA phone that will do everything. It may not have the 'cool factor' but it's functional. Add WiFi and I'm in. If not? I'll wait for the next version or the next phone that has it.

What is so 'full-on' about it all. Perhaps you could find some more useful adjectives?

I would love to get a blackberry, but no wifi equals no deal. Why have all the other features people want but not have wifi??

I am SO tired of Verizon disabling Wifi in their phones to try to extort the data charges from their members. GET THE POINT VERIZON! We want WIFI!!!! I'm seriously thinking of jumping ship to another carrier just for this simple issue.

I have an Iphone and use Wi-Fi much more than I use the 3G. Reason is: FASTER and FREE. I have no problem typing messages on the Iphone. Still, I love competition because now SJ can unleash his voice active keyboard. Bye bye!

WiFi is the most important feature in a phone for me. Ill stay with iphone for now.

phone looks great, why is everyone so hooked on WiFi. If you have a Data plan with the phone, then you have internet wherever you go. Which it would be stupid to buy the phone without a data plan because then you can't use the phone to its fullest

I prefer Iphone any day over this....No Wi-Fi? Plus the Iphone is the ultimate for music/movies/videos. Built in youtube and hundreds (and soon to be thousands) of applications. Iphones only downfall in my opinion is no picture texting. Iphone...much better

the problem will be that Verizon will disable most of the decent features so it can charge you $10-20 per month for their version. Anyone with a current bberry knows they disable GPS so you have to subscribe to VZNavigator. I assume the missing wi-fi was intentional so you could not avoid the broadband usage. If you want an iPhone-like phone, get an iPhone. Everything else is cubic zirconia.

Wow I have been waiting to resign with Verizon again for another 2 years and a new phone and I read this thrilling news....I have to get one of these they sound right up my alley...I have a Motorola Q from 2 years back and want something edgier and this sounds good for $200.00 I can see this being just twhat I need.

I have been waiting for BlackBerry to release a phone like this.

Hope it doesnt crash as much as the curve. On my second curve and it has started crashing. New BB looks good though and i never use wiFi. Bad idea though just releasing it to verizon, but i guess that give me time to see if it's actually worth it.

My wife has the iPhone (absolutely loves it), but I have verizon with a Razor. I plan on looking into the new Storm as we don't want to have 2 phones on the same carrier.

Hmmm... Looks and sounds a bit like the LG Secret (have they even made it to this side of the pond yet?).. I love mine, and the 5mp camera and video phone capabilities (that no U.S. service provider can supply yet) are amazing. Doesn't hurt that it's sexy too.. a total iPhone killer

dear phone companies, please dont copy the iPhone. im not saying anything bad or getting angry, but it annoys me that they are trying to copy apple. by the way, the iPhone is prettier(i dont want to sound girly)thank you for your effort Blackberry, but sadly it wasn't enough. once again, i dont want to sound mean :)

I feel like switching back to verizon now... Service was better, and now this cool phone... Might have to wait till the kinks are out and fixed... like the next generation.
