After months of rumors, the Storm—the first-ever touchscreen BlackBerry—is finally official, and it's set for Verizon Wireless (exclusively, for now) later this fall. Read on for the details.
Verizon hasn't coughed up a hard-and-fast release date for the Storm—nor any pricing details, for that matter—but this much we do know: It'll pack in dual-mode CDMA and GSM radios for full-on world calling, 3G access (both EV-DO Rev. A and HSPA), GPS (along with turn-by-turn directions), Bluetooth (including the A2DP profile for stereo Bluetooth headsets), and a 3.2-megapixel camera with flash and autofocus.
Measuring 4.4 by 2.4 by 0.55 inches and weighing in at about 5.5 ounces, the Storm (which is also set to arrive in Europe through Vodafone) looks to be roughly the same size as an iPhone or the upcoming T-Mobile G1, so it should be reasonably pocketable.
The centerpiece, of course, will be the Storm's 480 by 360-pixel, 3.25-inch glass display, which will support multitouch (good for two-finger gestures, a la the iPhone). Even better, though, is a feature that RIM calls "ClickThrough": a design that lets you "distinctly feel the screen being pressed and released with a gentle click" for a "highly intuitive experience." Sounds promising, but whether the Storm's display actually delivers the tactile experience that's missing on the iPhone and the G1 remains to be seen (or felt, I guess); I look forward to trying it out in person. Update: Click here for initial ClickThrough impressions from the Web; so far, so good.
In addition to the multitouch display, the Storm will also come with an ambient light sensor, along with an accelerometer that'll automatically turn the screen when you hold the phone sideways. Speaking of which: When it comes to entering text, holding the Storm in a landscape view will give you a full QWERTY touch keypad, while in portrait mode you'll get a SureType keypad (or the same layout as on a BlackBerry Pearl).
Naturally, messaging will doubtless be one of the Storm's strong suits. Expect full-on BlackBerry e-mail support, complete with push e-mail and access to POP and IMAP e-mail servers. Also on board: SMS, picture and instant messaging.
The Storm will also come with full-on Office document editing—including support for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents—courtesy of DataViz Documents to Go. Of course, plenty of other BlackBerry applications are already available, and there's word that a branded BlackBerry store is on tap, similar to Apple's App Store and the Android Market.
Besides its 3.2MP camera, the Storm is set to arrive with full HTML Web browser (double-tap to zoom, tap and slide to scroll), a video and music player, with Verizon promising smooth, full-screen video playback. There's also a 3.5mm jack for your earphones, 1GB of internal storage, and a microSD expansion slot for another 16GB of flash memory.
All in all, sounds like a formidable package, although something's missing if you look carefully: Wi-Fi. Ugh.
So, what do you think? Likes and dislikes? Any guesses on the price? (I've heard $199 with a two-year contract, but that's not official.) Sound off below.

Let's wait and see! Seeing is believing. By and large, the QWERTY will be gone from the handset landscape, leaving a vestigial footprint.
Once again another iphone wannabe, i wonder, why copy the Iphone concept over and over instead of innovate or at least try a new approach as Google did?. Ok lets see: Lg Nokia Blackberry All of them following Mac for the left overs.
does the internet still cost like $45 a month for blackberry? or is it VCAST for $15 a month? Which one does the storm carry?

I currently use the world edition 8830 crackberry. I have been waiting for the Iphone to become available to the Verizon customer (which I am), so I am very excited to see what this new gizmo will do for me. $200.00 bucks with a 2 year contract works for me also since I've been with Verizon since they were called AirTouch. WiFi is not that important to me either since I have to carry my laptop for CAD work anyways.
What are you going to do when the airlines start offering wifi for $9.99 for a trans-con flight and you'd like to surf the 'net, watch youtube, email, etc. and you look at the person next to you wtih an iphone doing all of that while your stuck with blackberry dead?
They had me sold to get one until I read no WiFi. That sunk the phone for me. I have WiFi in my house, its at my school, its in my coffee shop and in my grocery store. I don't like to have to pay for cell data service if I don't have to.
$10 for WiFi on a plane???? I'd use the $10 to help pay for checking my golf clubs. Or maybe have a couple drinks. I can think of a lot better things to do than e-mail, surf the net or even work while on a plane...
NO Wi-Fi?!?!? That's not that convenient if you are running business on the go. What's push good for if you have no wi-fi?
sounds like its gonna be a beast . the exclusion a wifi doesnt really bother me but the fact that only vreizon users will have it for the mean time does. lol
Awesome At least Black-Berry with Cam well done i will buy it (showing off :P)
Sounds good, but, no WIFI, no thank you.
With all that .. NO MP3 capability ?? i mean i kno the BB is a business phone but still id expect a little more .. but the push email is it ... i use the side kick lx and and the iphone.. but since i have the touch screen i use the iphone ... but i might try it when they realease it for reagular gsm carriers... i need it to have a sim card..
I am really hoping that SPRINT follows and comes out with this phone... Verizon and Sprint both you the CDMA network so I can only assume Sprint will follow Verizon in 3-6 months. Sprint needs to step the game up with their new phones
Hmm.. no wifi, 1gb... as annoying as my iPhone is sometimes... 16 gb and wifi beats this phone hands down.
Since Verizon is suppose to be buying out Alltel, will current Alltel users be able to get this too?? It really sounds sweet!
Apple iphone is hands down the best phone out there! someone bring their blackberry, old or new it doesnt matter, and i will make it look like a childs toy compared to the iphone! Good luck trying to match it!
I'm due for an upgrade in January and have been considering a blackberry. When I saw this, I knew I had to get it. CANT WAIT.
will it work with my windows exchange server?

I also am on the Verizon network & used to even work there. I will never be with another carrier one reason is VZW has the best service in my area. I have tried WIFI and I'm happy this will be on the EVDO network.
