Microsoft Fesses Up to Xbox 360 Glitches

After months of denying there was anything unusual about the high number of Xbox 360 hardware failures, Microsoft has finally admitted that too many 360s are displaying the dreading "red ring of death," and it's coughing up $1 billion to extend the Xbox's warranty. It's about time.

In an open letter to 360 gamers, Microsoft's Peter Moore stopped short of saying how many Xbox consoles had failed, but wrote "we've not been doing a good enough job...if we have let any of you down in the experience you have had with your Xbox 360, we sincerely apologize." As someone who suffered a dead Xbox myself, I with Microsoft could have just built a more stable console in the first place, but I'll take the apology, even if it's late.

So here's the deal: Microsoft has extended the Xbox 360's warranty to a full three years for any console that lights up with the "red ring of death" (a series of lights around the power button indicating a general hardware failure). If the three red lights flash on your Xbox, call the customer service line; the company will send you an empty box for shipping your sick console back to Microsoft HQ for repairs (the whole process takes anywhere from a week or so to a month). And if you've already paid to have your 360 repaired for a "red ring" problem, Microsoft will refund your money. Once all is said and done, the company will have spent about $1 billion on repairs to the faulty consoles. That's a huge expense for Microsoft's Xbox division, but given all the gamers who've had to send in their consoles for lengthy repairs, I'd say we're almost even-steven.

I purchased the Elite Unit over 7 months ago. I have never confronted any hardware difficulties with my unit. I am more than pleased with the quality of the product.

As many XBOXs that have broken down, it certainly is the exception, and not the rule. I know of at least a dozen friends with Xboxs, and only one had theirs break, after about 1 year of almost daily use. It was replaced quickly by Microsoft. In comparison, my Dell desktop, Apple laptop, and my new SUV have all had mechanical breakdowns in their first year, and no one is crying about their reliability. It just happens, nothing is 100% relible, it's more important in how the company stands behind it's product in fixing it, which I think Microsoft has done well.

I love the graphic's other than that. The hardware is crap. my first and second 360 trashed 4 or 5 games a piece. Burned a ring on the disk and stopped reading the disks. The third one started the same thing. All within one year. Best Buy wouldnt replace gamesa third time a third time. I returned the 360 for store credit and paid for a wii. I have two cordless controllers and 5 games I can't use. 360 is a piece.......microsoft should pay for wasting everyones time and money................

this is why I bought a PS3 proven company that knows the game industry that does not make you pay for online or spend a fortune to add on all the functions (hd dvd, harddrive etc) it should come with. M$ is making game consoles for one reason profit which they can't seem to get right the first one was a loss of money never made any profit, the second is costing a fortune due to RROD and PS3 is gunnin for the top spot the PS2 has been perched on for so many years. and this is not just oppinion on Xmas eve I went to see about gettin a few used games at the local pawn shops could not find but 2 PS3 games which did not interest me while the shelves were crammed with 360 consoles and games hmmmm.
