Sound off: Are you cutting back on tech spending?

With the Dow in freefall and experts warning that we're in for a long, painful recession, consumers have already slammed on the brakes when it comes to gadgets. But what about you?

The New York Times reported earlier this week that consumer spending on gadgets plummeted 13.8 percent last month compared to September 2007 levels—the steepest drop since the survey began in 2003, and predictions are dire for the holidays.

Indeed, big electronics retailers are feeling the pinch. Circuit City is on the brink of bankruptcy, with its stock price sitting at just 38 cents Thursday afternoon; a year ago, shares of Circuit City were trading at more than $8.50.

Anyway, with the stock market crumbling and the prospect of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, it's little wonder the many consumers—that means us—are thinking twice about coughing up a few grand for a new MacBook.

It's not like there aren't plenty of enticing gadgets to choose from: Besides those shiny new MacBooks and MacBook Pros, we've got the T-Mobile G1 next week, the touchscreen BlackBerry Storm later this year, that new Slingbox PRO-HD and the upcoming Slingcatcher. Of course, plenty of kids (big and small) are still clamoring for next-gen gaming consoles, while the Blu-ray versions of  "Iron Man" and "The Dark Knight" practically cry out for a new HDTV, plus a Blu-ray deck to go with it.

But is now the time to throw down several C-notes on the latest tech toys? Personally, there's nothing I'd like more than, say, a new Slingbox or a spanking-new laptop. Given the stormy economy, however, I'm playing it safe—instead of pricey new gadgets, I'm planning on doubling-down on what I have: More Netflix and Gamefly rentals, more TV shows on my Apple TV, and maybe a new retail game or two (say, "Gears of War 2" and "Call of Duty: World at War").

So, my dear readers, I ask you: Will you be cutting back on your tech spending now that the economy's tanking? What's still on the list, and what are you sacrificing? Or are you feeling bullish, despite the endless bad news?

I just purchased a HP with 24" monitor, and HP AIO for my office. Total $1,700.00 I will be buying 2 flat panels for our spare bedrooms and 1 for my office. My old Dell pc was 8 years old. Some things you just can't put off purchasing, but if everyone holds back, all you are doing is self perpetuating hate the doomsayers are saying. By the way, I am not wealthy, even though Obama may think so.

Last quarter was a new Digital camera, just purchased a new 24" iMac... Next is a Samsung 52" HDTV... and Apple TV or new MacMini if they ever update... Cutting back or stopping no, slowing down and being cautious yes. You can't stop technology.

Nope, perfect time to buy a new flat screen TV! Although, I will be paying cash, and we plan on spending less this year over the holidays. Gonna try to save some money for next year.

Just bought a Blu-ray player for my home. I've waited for the price to come down and it felt like now was the time to buy.

Nope. Waiting for MacWorld to purchase a new iPhone, even if I have to pay to get out of my Verizon contract early. I get my toy spending regulated anyway, but 2 iPhones (yes the misses gets one too) will be a nice post x-mas gift.

Nope, getting items as needed. However, no impulse spending every purchase is thought about over several days.

Absolutely I have slowed my tech spending to nothing, because with the rise of food, gas, medication, dentist etc and with my pay not going up a penny I don't have the money. Besides the rising price of everything; I know a lot of people are losing their jobs. Its scary what is happening to our economy. I don't think now is a good time to blow off the reality of unemployment and spend unnecessarily.

No changes yet. I buy tech when the old model dies. I usually get one new tech toy on my birthday in November, which this year falls the Monday after Thanksgiving. Good deals to be had that weekend it is rumored.

I'm also one who is saving for the cash purchase. The card may not like it but bill pay day will. Besides, by the time I have enough saved for what I think I need something new might be available.

I love tech gadgets, but they have fallen to the middle of my "want list", for now!

Instead of the new Bose Wave radio I really wanted.....I opted for a much cheaper Sony HD version. I figure I can use it in the garage someday when I feel comfortable buying what I really want.

Just bought top of the line 52 inch LCD Sony TV and Blu Ray player. I've been saving up for this purchase for years. I'm now enjoying great entertainment in my own home theater!

I've cut back on everything. I suspect that all tech devices will drop significantly in price as we get closer to Christmas. If I can't pay cash, I don't buy it. I've gone through a lot of recessions, but I've never seen an economic mess like we are experiencing today. A simple trick I use to keep from impulse buying is to write down the item, price & store. Wait three days & unless I look at my list, it's usually forgotten..

As a retailer, we can state that sales have slowed a little due to the concerns on the economy. Hopefully, things will accelerate as we get closer to the holidays.

I just bought a new iPhone and a second flip phone. I have not put off buying something I need (want).

  • 25 Posted by mlperryny on Thu Sep 3, 2009 7:23PM EDT Report Abuse

The only reason I am holding off on anything is to see what prices will do, I am still going to get what I want the timing may just dictate a longer wait. Simply, I am going to purchase on my terms and I am going to use the rocky economy to snag a few items I had been waiting to get. Although I didn't wait to get the new MacBook Pro - I nailed that the day it was in stores and I am thrilled that I got it.
