Apple: That's all for 2008, folks

Hoping for (or dreading) yet another special event where Steve Jobs dons his black turtleneck and announces something cool? Well, here's the news: As far as 2008's concerned, Apple's done.

Apple spokesman Bill Evans has told Macworld that Apple's "holiday line-up is set," and that no new products—no, not even the iMac refresh that was rumored for this month—will be unveiled before the New Year.

That means Apple will finally take a break after four big events in the past six months.

Consider: In June, Jobs announced the iPhone 3G. In July, the new iPhone went on sale around the world, drawing huge lines and an avalanche of headlines (OK, that wasn't an Apple event per se, but it sure felt like it). August was quiet, but September saw new iPods, including the revamped Nano. Finally, we got the redesigned MacBooks and MacBooks Pros in October.

Rumors had been swirling that new iMacs would be on the way before the year was out (the current iMac line is nearly a year old), but it looks like we'll have to keep waiting for a refresh.

Macworld notes that the Mac Mini, which hasn't seen an update since 2007, is the old man of the group. Early chatter had it that the Mini might be down for the count, but then the tide changed, with buzz of a spec bump and an updated motherboard with GeForce graphics. Guess we'll have to wait 'till next year.

In any case, I for one am ready for an Apple intermission, however brief—after all, Macworld 2009 is all teed up for January.

I cant really think of any way the current (gorgeous) iMacs could be bettered. I think that if they were do do something to the imacs. It would be a speed boost, price change, better graphics, better (or at least different) IO, hard drive revamps, and all of that kind of stuff, But I think as far as design goes, they are set. But As we have seen in the past, Apple will not stop, and will surely wow us with a new design sooner or later.

these Apple guys are very smart, and they are able to be in the news even if they dont have anything new to say. They know how to make shows. I'm very glad that, at least for this year, we will not have Steve Jobs anouncing new ipods anymore. Anyway I hope that Wall-e will have a nomination for the best movie of the year. That's the only place I wan't to see Jobs again (inasmuch as they are related).

I'm excited to see if Apple can do well using standard components. As far as being amazed by apple that's not happening. The PC I built cost less than the cheapest apple on the market. The PC is incredible and runs very well on linux and XP. When the newest apples arrive and contian Nvidia chipsets and graphics they will be no different than a Dell or HP except they will cost twice as much and probably will need a ton of driver updates to run.

The fact that I can sell my iMac thats close to 5 years old and get close to half of what it cost's brand new. A pc cannot get that price 5 years after its been around. IF you really need Windows boot camp runs it fine. Oh and I don't have to worry about the some odd 100,000 viruses and most of those are for PC.
