2008 is stacking up as the biggest year for cell phones yet, what with the new iPhone, the first Google phone, and the first touchscreen BlackBerry—and that's just for starters. Check out the hottest handsets of the holiday season.

BlackBerry Bold (AT&T)
Yeah, it still has a physical, old-school keypad, but with its updated interface, razor-sharp display, speedy performance, and top-notch video and music players, the Bold ($299 after rebates) is one of the hottest BlackBerrys I've ever laid eyes on. Highly recommended.

iPhone 3G (AT&T)
Love it or hate it, there's no denying that the iPhone is the hottest phone of the year—indeed, it's now the top-selling phone in the U.S., besting even the dirt-cheap Motorola RAZR. The 8GB model is now just $199 with a two-year service agreement, and the reception problems that users initially complained about have been essentially resolved thanks to a recent firmware update.

BlackBerry Storm (Verizon Wireless)
As the first touchscreen BlackBerry, the Storm ($199 after rebates) is getting a ton of ink, and its roomy, clickable display is certainly one-of-a-kind, but this red-hot handset has its share of drawbacks: it's sluggish, it lacks Wi-Fi, and its interface could use some work. Still, it's great for watching movies or listening to tunes, and its messaging features (provided you don't mind typing on a virtual QWERTY keypad) are tough to beat.

T-Mobile G1 (T-Mobile)
The first of the Google phones is a bit of an ugly ducking, but the G1 ($179 with a new two-year contract) comes 3G support, GPS, Wi-Fi, and a peppy, easy-to-use interface—courtesy of Google's Android operating system—that stacks up nicely against the iPhone UI.

HTC Touch Pro (Sprint)
A touchscreen Windows Mobile smartphone with a slide-out QWERTY keypad, the Touch Pro makes for an eye-catching (if somewhat hefty) piece of hardware. The slick TouchFlo interface is a pleasure to use, even if Windows Mobile itself remains a confusing thicket of menus.

Motorola Krave ZN4 (Verizon Wireless)
Beam me up, Scotty! With its clear plastic flip, the touchscreen ZN4 bears more than a passing resemblance to a Star Trek communicator. The 3G-enabled crave boasts Verizon's live Mobile TV service, as well as full-track music downloads, turn-by-turn GPS navigation, and a two-megapixel camera.

LG Lotus (Sprint)
Attention, fashionistas: Here's a eye-catching 3G flip phone with your name on it. The LG Lotus ($149 after rebates) packs in a full QWERTY keypad, perfect for rabid texters, as well as streaming video, music downloads, and your choice of e-mail, text, and instant messaging options.

Motorola MOTOZINE ZN5 (T-Mobile)
There are camera phones, and there are camera phones—and the ZN5, my friends, is among the latter. Developed in partnership with Kodak, the ZN5's five-megapixel, auto-focus camera (with a Xenon flash) takes the best pictures I've ever seen from a camera phone, and at just $99 after rebates, it's a bargain to boot.

We have had verizon for many years now and are the only ones of our friends/family that do not have tons of dropped calls or lack service in various places. We lose service very little and when we do it's only for a short distance.

I have the LG Dare from Verizon. Similar to the Storm but not a Blackberry. Touch screen and compact. It has a 3.2 mp camera too that will allow you to take landscape/panoramic pics too.

I would reccommend the IPhone and AT&T to anyone. I was with Nextel and switched to AT&T and have much better service and pricing as well as roll over of unused minutes.

The HTC TOUCH PRO is the greatest phone I have ever had and I have had alot! If not for the windows software on the phone it would be PERFECT!!!!! If I was someone looking for a new phone this is the one!!!!!!!! Stay away from the palm treo 800. Palm is a great phone but the treo 800 gave me BIG PROBLEMS. I had three of them! Do your self a favor and go for the HTC TOUCH PRO or HTC TOUCH!

I have the original i-Phone and love it. While it doesn't have 3G, since I manly use it with wi fi it works fine. Would like to have the 3G but I will wait for a later version before buying a new one. You can't beat the i-Phone! Period.

Sprint has a lot of great new phones and the best data network of any carrier. Also, their new rate plans have much better value than AT&T/Verizon. Don't be so quick to leave Sprint - they have made a lot of improvements in the last year.

I agree, what about US Cellular? I have been a customer for over four years, and I find the service to be fantastic. No dropped calls, nothing. And, it's cheaper than all the others. And the best part? When someone calls me and it goes to voice mail, the beep comes immediately after my voice mail greeting, you don't have to sit there an extra 30 seconds listening to the automatic woman telling you how to leave a message. Go US Cellular! Now, what's a good phone for them?

Does anyone have the new sprint instinct phone? I was curious about its performance.

I have the HTC Touch (wich was a very good phone) and now i have the Samsung Instinct. I love both phones but the instinct is very user friendly! Texting on the instinct is perfect and a lot easier than the Touch. Couple of friends of mine have the iphone and the instinct we all agree there are close to one another.

I'm a faithful user of Sanyo phones and Sprint customer. My 3G phones are quick and efficient. And I love my crystal CLEAR phone calls. I've only had 4 Sanyo phones in ten years. Never had a problem with them. I have had friends and family leave Verison, ATT and T-mobil because of their network disappoint. Slow 3G, dropped calls and no signal when standing side-by-side with me in certian areas. Even when driving. But hey, if your service works for you cool and if not? Will take care.

I love my Blackberry from AT&T. Rollover minutes are great, you can't beat that deal. I rarely ever experience dropped calls and I drive all over the place. I think it is misconception that Verizon has a better network than AT&T. At some point every phone with every carrier is going to have a dropped call.
