Audiences in New York, Boston, and L.A. won't just be watching the game—they’ll be in the game, or at least that's the idea behind next week's invite-only 3-D demo.

The Wall Street Journal reports that three movie theaters—one in each city—will be wired for 3-D projection, while the NFL will lean on 3ality Digital to shoot the Dec. 4 contest in 3-D. The broadcast will be downlinked to the three theaters via satellite, and yes—viewers will have to wear special glasses to get the full 3-D effect.

As the Journal reports, the NFL shot some footage from Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004 in 3-D, and viewers watching clips tried to "crouch down to catch the ball," one NFL exec bragged. But that footage was taped; next week's game will be shown live.

So, are we talking the beginning of live 3-D broadcasts from the NFL? Well … maybe. NFL execs are telling the Journal that next week's 3-D game is a "proof of concept … we want to demonstrate this and let people get excited about it and see what the future holds."

What about tickets for the 3-D broadcast? Sorry, football fans; next week's event is closed to the public. If you know someone in the industry, now's the time to start kissing up.

dude that is awsome i wouldnt care if if it looked like there was a shooter in my family room, its not like freddy or jason is really going to be there. think about it, your watchen basketball and lebron james is goin up for the dunk and your sitten there watchen him. like there is a hoop in you family room and he is dribbling down the court getting ready to bust the rim right in front of you, now that would be cool

i think its pretty cool and an advantage in technology! yes, i agree actually BEING THERE is A LOT better but for those of us who arent rich and can sit front row at the 50yd line, this helps! I WANNA SEE 3-D!! lol. the exec.'s should do "major city screenings" of certain games and let the open public do a survey/give their take on the concept! PLEASEEEEE!!!!!! :) p.s. - happy thanksgiving!

I think it will be a fun enviroment for those that cant go to the actual game but want the semi-realistic game feel. Without a doubt many will enjoy it just as they do the IMAX movies and other interactive visuals .. Didn't the Disney kid rack up millions for that movie concert..

Maybe with 3-D the announcers will at least stop telling you what you saw other than what you actually saw. It might shut the Big mouths up. Did you see that. No neither did anyone else, except you.

Interesting that they chose a team that's been imploding for years (Raiders) for their 1st 3-D broadcast.

I am all for it. As long as I can stillsee the game at home for free. I see no problem offering it as another option for some one to go pay to see.

I still don't think we need digital television or high definition. Will this 3D device be crammed down our throats next?

Go ahead and distribute NFL games to theaters and homes with 3D viewing capability - sell it so you can get more renenue; I don't care, but lower the price of the game tickets, and lower those cry-baby's salaries - and get rid of the criminal's that are playing the game. You're image stinks!

I don't think that even 3d can make this game worth watching!

Tell me about it when everybody can have it. Until then most of the country is outside looking in.

I'm a huge Charger fan. Is this just a way for the Chargers to get people watching their games again.

Sounds awsome. I can't wait till this technology becomes viable for home use. Then, they can branch out from football to other sports. I want to feel like that screaming line drive is heading right for me.
