MS: No repeat of Xbox Live holiday meltdown ("hopefully")

Remember last December, when we fired up our Xbox 360s and got ready to play "Halo 3" online or rent movies on the Video Marketplace—only to get a server error thanks to a crush of new Live users? Well, according to Microsoft at least, it won't happen again.

Xbox exec Aaron Greenberg told gaming blog Kotaku that his team has been shoring up the Live servers in preparation for holiday rush.

"We are well prepared for the type of growth we expect this holiday," Greenberg said. "We will have people standing by … knock on wood we will hopefully not have any issues."

Well, let's hope so. Last year, the Xbox Live servers were slammed for nearly a month—starting a few days before Christmas and through New Year's Day—after untold thousands of new users tried to create Live accounts. The Live Marketplace and online multiplayer games slowed to crawl, and millions of users found themselves locked out of Live altogether. Microsoft ultimately apologized and offered users a free Live Arcade game for their trouble.

So, assurances aside, should we brace ourselves for another Live holiday debacle? Well ... say what you will about Microsoft, but it learns from its mistakes. Live had a couple of big tests during the past 11 months—the release of the record-breaking "Grand Theft Auto IV," and the system-wide rollout of its top-to-bottom Dashboard redesign, a.k.a. the "New Xbox Experience" (talk about a potential train wreck)—and both went off pretty much without a hitch. With that in mind, I'm guessing that we won't see another Live meltdown come Christmas.

Knock wood.

Yeah... We can hope it won't happen again, but it probably will- People with slow connections jumping into the fold is never a good thing in online gaming. I've got the fastest residential connection I can get in my area, and it has paid off so far. Every time I go into Theatre in Halo 3 with anybody in party, it tells them to let me take over as Party Leader because I've got the best connection- It just makes me smile :]
