Almost a year in the making, the latest SlingPlayer Mobile client—which will let Slingbox owners sling their video to their BlackBerry phones—is set to arrive before the end of the year.
The new SlingPlayer Mobile beta (free for now, but probably $29 once it comes out of beta) will work with six of the newer BlackBerry models, including the Bold, the Curve 8900 and 8320, the Pearl 8120, the Pearl Flip, and the 8820. Sorry, Storm users—looks like you're out of luck for now.
It's been a long wait for the BlackBerry version of SlingPlayer Mobile, which was first announced last January, and was rumored to be in development for months before that.
So, what's so special about SlingPlayer Mobile? Simple: If you have a
Slingbox attached to your DVR (or your Apple TV, for that matter), you can send (or "sling") video from your DVR via the Slingbox to SlingPlayer Mobile on your phone. The SlingPlayer Mobile client includes controls that'll let you change channels, view the programming guide (which will probably look pretty tiny on your phone's display), and play shows saved in your DVR queue. Nice.
There are already SlingPlayer Mobile versions available for Windows Mobile, Symbian, and Palm smartphones; an iPhone version was rumored to be in the works, but (unfortunately) nothing's been announced yet. Stay tuned.
