Eyes-on with Samsung's MBP200 pico projector

Pico (read: really really small) projectors are everywhere at this year's CES, and Samsung's in the mix with its own version: the MBP200, a DLP-powered mobile projection accessory that's set to arrive later this year.

About the size of, say, a compact digital still camera and weighing in at about 5.6 ounces, the MBP200 (no price yet) is a little bigger than some of the other pico projectors I've seen—then again, it also comes with a built-in 2.2-inch LCD, a speaker and a microSD memory slot (support for up to 16GB).

Hook the MBP200 up to your cell phone or laptop (or just snap in a microSD card with video files) and you're good to go; according to Samsung, the diminutive projector is capable of throwing HVGA (480 by 320) images as big as 50 inches, although I wouldn't expect a top-notch image at that size.

Of course, it's tough to judge image quality in a brightly-lit exhibition hall; given that, the 20-inch-ish projected picture I saw from the MBP200 looked relatively sharp, if a bit washed out (again, I'd chalk that up to the poor lighting).

Not bad, but what about pico projectors built directly into cell phones? Well, Samsung actually had one on hand—a Korea-only handset, that is. Image quality was about as good as on the MBP200 accessory, but one thing I noticed immediately was that the phone itself began to get hot once the projector was on—really hot. Hmmmm.

So, thoughts on the growing pico projector trend? Is this a feature/accessory you'd want for your cell phone?

The Microvision (MVIS) PicoP is far better - I think the Samsung one uses LEDs and is not nearly as bright, also uses more battery power and gets hot. MVIS's version uses lasers, is smaller, brighter, and has minimal heat. Based on what I've seen it looks like the best in class at the show. I've played with one with an iTouch, super cool and hi res on the wall.

Come on now, mkeith, what a rediculous thing to say. Not that I spend alot of time watching movies or clips on my phone, but I COULD if I wanted to. I have a Motorola W490, not the greatest phone, but does have alot of memory for a 'dated' phone. (2GB) The phone's internal memory is better than most of this type. The games I've downloaded are exceptional and would look better at say, 30". There are many software conversion programs for mpg, avi, etc to 3gp. I, personally, won't be buying one of these devices, but I am positive there are alot of people drooling at the prospect of using this.

I think it would be kind of sweet to have a little projector built into your phone... never know what you might need it for.... however i would skip this version and wait till they make more like the little 3d holographic one that shoots out of R2D2 in star wars... now that would be cool! ha

Once the heat issue is resolved, wouldn't it be great to have in an Ipod to watch movies with? Immagine watching a projected movie or presentation on the fly...not bad for a canned PowerPoint presentation either, eh? This could fold in with hologram technology currently rolling out: "...help us Ben Kanobi, you are our last hope..."

Ok, think about this scenario. If you are able to integrate a pico projector in a mini laptop or a laptop computer then you may be able to subsitute the screen in a tight spot. For instance, you are on the plane and want to have a screen projected on the back of the seat in front of you. This could be the same with an iphone, cell phone, etc. if you wanted to share you display with a group of folks for a meeting, etc. Those are my thoughts. I think smaller projectors could be very helpful! David

The MVIS website says they would be priced between 400-500

You "noticed" it got hot? Gee, maybe that has something to do with putting 100 watts worth of light for a 40 inch image into a hand held device.
