If you're an Amp'd subscriber, it looks like you're getting a bit of a break. Amp'd has announced that it's keeping its service running for one more week, although it appears that the bell is still going to toll.
According to the Amp'd Web site, the MVNO will be "potentially suspending U.S. operations" on July 31. The original plan was that the bankrupt service was to
shut down this morning at 12:01 a.m., but apparently Amp'd has bought a little more time. (The Amp'd customer service line is now closed, however.)
The "potentially" language sounds like little more than wishful thinking; Amp'd owes an enormous amount of cash to Verizon Wireless, which hosts the Amp'd service on its network. That said, Amp'd claims that it's "in discussions with several parties" for a possible sale, so who knows—maybe we have another surprise in store.
In the meantime, Amp'd has a
useful Q&A up on its site about the impending shutdown. Among the salient details: you can keep your Amp'd phone if you switch to a CDMA carrier like Verizon Wireless or Sprint Also, if you still have pay-as-you-go minutes and you're looking for a refund, bad news: you'll have to file a claim on a Chapter 11 Web site. Don't count on your cash anytime soon.
