Helio Turns on Exchange Support for Ocean

Watch out, iPhone—the Ocean is nipping at your heels. Helio's just announced that it's switched on Exchange ActiveSync support for its latest smartphone, allowing for wireless synchronization of e-mail messages, calendars, and contacts with corporate servers.

The Ocean's support for Exchange wasn't a secret (Helio announced that the Ocean would work with Exchange servers when the phone was first announced in March), but today's the first day you can download the new Exchange for Mail app. Once installed, the patch will let your Ocean sync with Exchange 2003 or 2007 servers—nice for corporate users looking to check their e-mail, events and contacts while they're on the road. The service won't be free, however; after a 60-day free beta, Helio will charge you $10 a month for Exchange syncing. Also on tap (but not available quite yet) is a viewer for Office documents and PDFs.

Helio's new Exchange for Mail app gives the Ocean a leg up in its battle with the iPhone (well, in the messaging arena, at least). For now, the best the iPhone can do for Exchange users is IMAP support—good for syncing e-mail messages and directories, but useless when it comes to over-the-air calendar and contact syncing. I'm using Mailstreet's hosted Exchange service with my iPhone, and the IMAP e-mail syncing works nicely, but full Exchange support (or at least iCal and Address Book syncing over Bluetooth) would definitely be a nice touch.

the only reason why helio has been a "secret" is that they have not marketed as well as other companies, and they are trying to compete with ATT, US Cellular, and Cingular. I have had Helio for over a year, and no problems! I will not change to a different company. Plus the Ocean is great because I can check my work email and personal email. Stop looking at sidekicks and iphones and get an ocean!
