The massive VoIP provider has apparently fallen victim to a "software issue," leaving millions of chatters in the lurch—and a fix may not be coming until Friday.

Word of the outage started hitting the Web early this morning and continued throughout the day. According to the AP, users in Columbia, Brazil, Germany, Finland, and the U.S. reported that they couldn't make calls or even log on. No immediate word on exactly how many of Skype's estimated 220 million users have been locked out of the service—although you can count at least one for sure, as I haven't been able to log on all day.

A message on Skype's Web site blames a "software issue" for the outage, and that the problem should be fixed "within 12 to 24 hours"—ouch. The message recommends leaving your Skype client on and promises that you'll be logged back in once everything's back to normal.

Anyone else out there having trouble with Skype today? And if so, how are you dealing?

Don't have skype, but I have had the same problem with Vonage not working because of an unknown problem on my end. Not fun.

I have not been able to sign in either. I have SkypeOut and a SkypeIn number. I just hope that my voicemail is picking up all of my missed calls.

My Skype was unreliable for the last few days ,it said on the icon 'Do not Disturb" I clicked on line but it reverted back to do not disturb. So I removed Skype from my computer.

I have had no problem signing in, but I have ALWAYS had a problem with Skype detecting my microphones, for some odd reason. I have checked every possible reason and have found nothing on my end that is creating the problem.
