The massive VoIP provider has apparently fallen victim to a "software issue," leaving millions of chatters in the lurch—and a fix may not be coming until Friday.

Word of the outage started hitting the Web early this morning and continued throughout the day. According to the AP, users in Columbia, Brazil, Germany, Finland, and the U.S. reported that they couldn't make calls or even log on. No immediate word on exactly how many of Skype's estimated 220 million users have been locked out of the service—although you can count at least one for sure, as I haven't been able to log on all day.

A message on Skype's Web site blames a "software issue" for the outage, and that the problem should be fixed "within 12 to 24 hours"—ouch. The message recommends leaving your Skype client on and promises that you'll be logged back in once everything's back to normal.

Anyone else out there having trouble with Skype today? And if so, how are you dealing?

Could someone entertain a question from a techno Luddite? Does Skype and Vonage work from a satellite? I am moving to a rural, mountain area in BC and rather than get phone service from the local people who are not too responsive and because there are high winds which constantly bring down the electrical connection I was trying to investigate a satellite phone. Also need internet service and can you get both. Thanks for any info.

I had logging in problem when my skype decided to log me out when i was in the middle of something. I got the message that my password had been changed yet as far as i know i hadn't changed it. I shut my machine down and restarted and i was able to login again no problems afetr that i think the issues were sorted out on my end. My SKYPE is back up and running fine though i have a problem with the calling as the system is not clear

I had the same problem with Skype and the phone service didn't even have a phone number to call. A PHONE service with no PHONE number. What a joke. So I have since switched to Yahoo Messenger and have been with them since January and have had no problems with them. I am very happy with this service than with Skype.
