No iPhones, iPods at Bill Gates's house

Bill Gates's sprawling Washington state compound is, as you might expect, packed to the gills with bleeding-edge gear, from the heated floors and 20-seat home theater to the X-ray machine (for screening the mail, of course) and miles of fiber-optic cabling. But here's what you definitely won't find at chez Gates: an iPhone.

In the latest issue of Vogue, Bill's wife, Melinda Gates, reveals that among the "very few things" on "the banned list in our household" are—you guessed it—iPods and iPhones.

Brutal, yes—especially for Bill and Melinda's three kids (two daughters and a son, aged 12, six, and nine, respectively), who'll just have to grin and bear it as their little pals make merry with the latest and greatest iPod.

And even Melinda herself admits to an occasional pang of Apple envy: "Every now and then I look at my friends and say, 'Ooh, I wouldn't mind having that iPhone.'" (Ouch!)

Then again, what else did we expect from Microsoft founder Bill Gates? The man has his pride, not to mention scores of Windows Mobile and Zune team members who'd probably feel a tad bit hurt if Bill Jr. was running around with an iPhone.

So, which phones and MP3 players are on the Gates's "good-to-go" list? Well, there's always the Zune for music and video—not the sexiest MP3 player out there, mind you, but at least it's got Wi-Fi and a snazzy interface.

And of course, there are plenty of Windows Mobile handsets to choose from; personally, I'd go for the Palm Treo Pro (if I had to get a Windows Mobile phone, that is), although it's not exactly a barrel of fun for the teens. Or how about the HTC Touch Pro? That's a pretty cool phone … I guess (as I pat the iPhone 3G in my jeans pocket).

I think this comment sums it up best: "...scores of Windows Mobile and Zune team members who'd probably feel a tad bit hurt if Bill Jr. was running around with an iPhone..." Bill Gates didn't get to be the world's richest man by being a dummy. If he started running around with an iPhone and iPod and Apple's marketing department got wind of it, the ensuing publicity would be very tough on Microsoft.

Maybe Bill Gates should make software that actually works... All we get with microsoft is the feeling that the designers are sitting around laughing at us as the software does whatever it wants randomly.

I love Apple. Since I bought my first Mac (mini), about three months ago, and my first iPod about one year ago, I will never buy another PC again. Apple ROCKS!!!

@miggy_san45, sharp makes the sidekicks, and then motorola came out with a cheeper version of it, the slider. but sharp is the original maker. i feel bad for his kids, i don't know how i would live without my apple products. i'm a designer and i NEED my macbook pro. windows vista doesn't even compete. I wonder what would happen if one of his kids became a graphic artist.

I dunno, I dont agree with that, cant allow your kids to have iPod iPhone stuff just bcuz you own yourself as Microsoft. ...My opinion, if you love other people's products, then they'd love yours too.

I think it is kind of funny, good for you Bill. But...if I was his kid, I'd tell him, "look, make a phone and an mp3 player as good as apple with the online databases to support it, and it won't be an issue pops!".

if it is style you seek i dont think you can go any better then what i have a samsung instinct... has free apps for one, an mp3 player, live tv(so i dont miss any sports games) and a 2.0 mega cam... just the tv alone makes it better then the p.o.s. iphone also the first gen of the iphone werent compatible with the bluetooth head set and that made them really suck... you have this big clunky p.o.s. that you have to hold up to your ear all day...

Can the person that interviewed Mr. Gates please ask him why Vista blows harder than Nickelback?

  • 60 Posted by nuetronhead on Thu Sep 3, 2009 7:42PM EDT Report Abuse

Haha, this is funny, but expected nontheless. Yet I though he would expand that to all Apple products. But still what do you expect, he's the owner and creator of Microsoft, why wouldn't you expect him to ban stuff like that. Still that's funny wife and kids with no idevices. Ah well I don't use them anyway, I find they're a total waste of money with all the useless extra features. Kudos to you Bill Gates, kudos (I always respect that man with greatness)

"12, six, and nine??" does yahoo just let anyone off the streets write for them these days?

  • 65 Posted by paulkauf on Thu Sep 3, 2009 8:03PM EDT Report Abuse

right there with them. apple sucks. way overrated. its for idiots who want a single software provider, and not much choice. microsoft isn't necessarily the best, but at least with that platform that has wide acceptanc and tons of apps. Linux rocks also . . .
