Rumor: PlayStation 3 price cut on the way?

I'm not sure if this is case of a legitimate rumor (is there such a thing?) or just wishful thinking, but there's growing buzz that Sony might see the light and chop $100 off the price of its 80GB PS3.

So says CVG (via Kotaku), which claims that retailers in the UK have heard from Sony that both PSP and PS3 price drops are "definitely coming soon," although there's still no word on when—or how much, for that matter.

Naturally, Sony won't comment one way or the other, although it's worth noting that Sony reps told me as recently as last week that the $399 price tag for its cheapest PS3—the 80GB model—isn't going anywhere.

Still, CVG says that "word on the street" is that Sony might drop the price for the 80GB PS3 to $300 here in the U.S.—and possibly as soon as next week (which is "around the time" of next week's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, as CVG notes).

Price drop rumors are a dime a dozen, of course, but Sony is under enormous pressure to drop prices for the PS3, which—after dominating the gaming industry with the PS2 just a few years ago—managed to lose its lead to the Wii ($150 cheaper than the PS3) and Microsoft's Xbox 360 ($200 cheaper, if you buy the stripped-down "Arcade" console).

Indeed, many of you have told me that if Sony would only cut the price of the 80GB PS3 to $299 (or even better, to $249), you'd jump.

In any case, guess we'll find out the truth next week.

So, what do you think—believe the price drop rumors? What's your sweet spot for a new PS3?

I personally would buy a ps3 if I had enough money right this very second. In my personal experience, you get what you pay for when it comes to electronics.

bought mine over 2 years ago at $600.. i know that price seems exhorbitant and ridiculous now, but i didnt think much about it then and looking back i feel i've more than gotten my money's worth.. It's been a reliable gaming system that has been a great bluray movie player as well..

I'd reluctantly buy @ $299....but I'd be on my way to Gamestop tonight if it was $249!
