Ben to Apple: Enough with the "Mac vs. PC" ads!

Yes, I'm a Machead. I own a MacBook Pro, an old PowerBook G4, an Apple Airport Extreme Wi-Fi base station, an Apple TV, and an iPhone—and my wife has an iPhone, too. But if I see one more of those smug, squirm-inducing "Mac vs. PC" ads on TV, I'm gonna toss my HDTV out the window.

The final straw was last night, after watching one of the latest ads, entitled "Stacks." (Apple has all the ads—a few dozen, from the looks of it, dating back to 2006—enshrined right here, for obsessive Mac fanboys to endlessly fawn over.)

As usual, the ever-cool Justin Long ("I'm a Mac!") asks the perpetually stiff and uptight PC stand-in John Hodgeman why he's (in this case) "having a very difficult time finding pictures of my friends!"

"Wait," Long asks quizzically, "so you're just going to look through your thousands of photos until you find the right one?"

Hodgeman, as is his habit, looks at Long like he's an idiot. "Yes, one by one, what other way is there?"

At which point Long sympathetically telling Hodgeman—sorry, I meant "PC"—about a "cool new feature" in iPhoto: "Faces," which let you just "tag a face once, and iphoto automatically find other pictures of that person for you!"

Hodgeman protests that it "sounds expensive," but Long cheerfully replies that iPhoto "comes free on every new Mac." ("New" is the key word here; I paid $79 for my copy of the iLife '09 suite, which includes the new iPhoto.)

PC then purses his lips, admits that "I guess I could refine my search method," hands a stack of snapshots over to Mac and barks, "You do it."

Funny right? Well, no actually—instead, at the end of the ad, I found myself shouting "Arghh! Faces does not find all your friends automatically!!!"

How do I know this? Only after hours of pointing and click on iPhoto, telling "Faces" that no, that portrait up on the wall of that restaurant is not my Uncle Jim, and that perfectly focused and lit "unknown face" right there? That's my wife, for Pete's sake, the exact same wife I've tagged like, dozens of times in iPhoto by now!

Hey, I recognize that face-recognition technology is never perfect, but please—don't sit there (or stand there in my TV, for that matter) and tell me that a Mac will sort though "thousands" of photos and "automatically" tag all your friends and family, after you've tagged someone just "once." At least, it didn't for me.

This new "Mac vs. PC" ad reminds me of an earlier generation of Apple commercials, which was only slightly less annoying: The testimonials from "real" users about how easy their Macs were to use.

One of them in particular comes to mind: A charming young woman who was delighted that she could plug her printer into her new Mac, and it "just worked"—unlike PCs, which require these annoying things called printer drivers.

That ad stuck in my craw a bit, because  … well, I'd just unwrapped a new HP photo printer for Christmas, and when I tried plugging it into my iBook G3, guess what? It didn't "just work." I had to visit HP's Web site, search for my model number, and ... yes, download a driver.

Don't get me wrong: I love my Mac. I love my iPhone. I'm not giving them up. But I really, really hate these ads (and I find it amusing that so many diehard Mac apologists are totally up in arms over a few low-key "Lauren" ads after Apple's three-year parade of "Mac vs. PC" spots). They're smug, insufferable, embarrassing—and sometimes, flat-out wrong.

C'mon, Apple—enough is enough. You're better than this.

I love my Mac and I do think in general they work easier/better than PCs. But Macs have their problems. (I have a Linux laptop too: great for me would I recommend it to my Mom? Not a chance.) There is no perfect computer out there. -- On the Ads: interesting that "PC" is funny and you feel sympathy for him while "Mac" is kind of a self-righteous know-it-all. Why does that work as an ad strategy?

Well the ad works because it forces the consumer to pick sides. In most situations people tend to take the side of the agressor. I always thought these ads were very childish, kinda like that kid in highschool that thought he was the best at everything and would brag and brag until one day someone just punched him in the mouth.

I'm a PC user that has a bit of Mac envy from time to time. But it is hard to justify making the switch given the price difference when there are far more important things (for me at least) to be spending my money on. And I'm sure if Apple didn't spend so much plastering these ads everywhere, their computers wouldn't cost so much! I do think that John Hodgeman is one of the funniest men alive though. Too bad he spends his time making these commercials.

I have a PC, always have and for the foreseeable will continue to have one, The only thing apple I have is an Ipod and the only thing apple that I want is an Iphone. But I have always loved these commercials, I find myself stopping and going back to watch them after I notice one during my normal fast forwarding through commercials on my DVR. They are way funnier and more relevant than most commercials.

I still rather enjoy those ads, and I'm a PC user. The funny thing about those ads is that surveys show people in general relate to the bumbling John Hodgeman character better than the too-cool-for-school Justin Long character. I know who I'd rather invite to a barbecue and he's not the one wearing blue jeans.

Yeah, when is Apple going to take a hint and realize, acting smug doesnt equate to being cool. I dont know about you other Mac owners, but I once owned one two years ago and every time I told someone i had a mac I always felt in the back of my mind as if I was being a showoff or something. Got a PC now and like it better and cheaper.

Aww come on people quit the crying. The later models of printers from HP are MAC compatible. Check out their website. I love em both. Cry cry "baby" Ben acting like someone stole your bike. The truth be told it's whatever works for you and yes...there are people who use them both.

Wow you couldn't have written this at a better time. Last night after seeing one of these ads on TV while messing around with my imac. Next thing I know my imac freezes up. Funny thing is the ad has future pc freeze up implying that Mac don't do that. Well this morning after having not been able to unfreeze it I finally had to pull the plug. It leads me to believe otherwise. Sorry if the post don't make sense as I am not great at using my blackberry for posting on teh intertubes.

The thing is, the question of "which is better" is very opinionated... and the Mac vs. PC commercials are alright, and pretty funny as well. However, I agree with Ben in the idea that Apple shouldn't use false advertisement, which I've seen in quite a few ads. Also, the smugness of all the recent ads have a decidedly aggressive feel to them, which I don't find too appealing. Die-hard apple fans should feel ashamed. Ben's right. Apple IS better than this.

if you didnt know Ben, Apple is all about smugness. All the apple userd are brain washed into thinking that their wall paper on their macs way cooler than pc, and then steve jobs comes along and sells them another 79 dollars software which makes their wallpaper looks more cooler. Apple has only the looks, what feature they smug can all be found in millions of software you can get from the internet. I used Macs but i am never going to get macs and their smugness. Its PC all the way baby.

How childishly naive to expect truth in commercials. It's a commercial! It won't tell the bad stuff about Apple, only the good. It also won't tell you about good things about PC. DUH

the one thing about mac ads is that it suggests that everyone who needs computer just to do some work (or maybe play zillions of games available for PC) are overweight, suit&glass wearing, boring losers. way to go MR. Jobs, way to go! insult us more so that we can "get a Mac"...

  • 22 Posted by rommelirico on Thu Sep 3, 2009 8:49PM EDT Report Abuse

FACT: Anything that is related in any way to Steve Jobs will be smug.

For someone claims to love their Mac, I have to say you just gave me a wheelbarrel full of reasons not to switch. I never have any of the problems the ads talk about with my PC and yet you keep describing problems with your Mac my PC doesn't have. How exactly is that better?

PC user here. I assembled my own PC last year from parts. Do you know how much it cost me? 650$. Yes, with OS (Vista). Everything else I needed for my home use was free (antivirus, office, movie software, burning software, upgrades...). And it works almost a year with only one (ONE) problem so far, I got BSOD when I downloaded some murky drivers. My 650$ quad core PC is more than enough for me. Why should I spend 1500-2000$ for a Mac?
