Refurbished iPhones: Worth the Risk?

Reader JeffK writes: I saw the news that refurbished iPhones are on sale for $100 off. I'm tempted, but how big of a risk am I taking? Am I better off just buying a new one?

I'm often asked about the wisdom of buying refurbished (i.e., used) tech products, and my answer is always the same: it depends on the manufacturer and/or reseller. Apple seems to have a pretty good reputation when it comes to refurbished items, and the company pledges that it thoroughly tests, cleans and repackages all its used good before reselling them (and a one-year warranty is also part of the deal).

I've never bought any used Apple wares myself, but from what I've heard, refurbished Apple hardware typically arrive in pretty good shape, and with a minimum of nicks and scratches. That said, there's always some risk inherent in buying used tech (or used anything else, for that matter), hence the $100 off the retail price. If you do decide to get a refurbished iPhone, I'd strongly recommend you shop at an actual Apple retail store—that way, you can inspect the goods on-site, and if you see any scuffs you don't like (or if the phone doesn't turn on), you can request a new device right there.

I'm an employee at an Apple store and I would like to say that your advice is a bit out of date. Apple Stores no longer carry/sell refurbished products. You can only buy them on the Apple web site.

Huh -- OK, well that's a bummer. In that case, anyone who's dead-set on getting a pristine, unscuffed iPhone is probably better off buying a new device. But if you're willing to accept the odd nick and scratch for $100 in savings, then I'd say it's worth a shot.

Poor Ben- he didn't know things changed. Neither did I for that matter. A friend of mine bought a 30gig iPod about 2 or 3 months ago at an Apple store. When did this change take place?

Actually Apple just passed Gateway to become the #3 pc seller in the marketplace.....know your facts before you go spouting things off. Apple has one of the best reputations for repair and support issues and hardware can often be taken to one of their stores and fixed or replaced same day. If you don't like Apple products you are of course welcome to your opinion. But for people who want their computers to actually work and not crash constantly, its a nice alternative to windows.
