Looks like the PSP Go—complete with a 3.8-inch display, 16GB of flash memory, slide-out controls, and no UMD drive—is indeed a go, as subscribers to Sony's PlayStation 3 video magazine learned over the weekend.
Kotaku reports that the latest issue of Qore, a downloadable video magazine for the PS3, apparently went live a little early, and the episode spills the beans on the
hotly-anticipated update to the PlayStation Portable.
You can
check out the video for yourself right here, although it pretty much confirms the existing rumors: a 3.8-inch screen (which will hopefully mark an improvement over the jaggy display on the existing PSP-3000), 16GB of internal flash storage, along with a Memory Stick Micro slot, and slide out controls (complete with the standard PSP four-way directional keys, face buttons, and a single analog stick).
The biggest news (again, as expected) is what's missing: a UMB disc drive. Instead, you'll be able to download games, movies, and TV shows over the PlayStation Network store.
Also confirmed: the existing PSP-3000 isn't going anywhere. Both the 3000 and the Go will be sold side-by-side.
Other details: The Bluetooth-enabled Go (which, according to Kotaku, you'll be able to pair with a phone) will be 43-percent lighter than the PSP-3000, and we should also expect a PSP edition of Gran Tourismo, plus a new Metal Gear Solid title.
Still unanswered: Whether the PSP will be getting downloadable game rentals (
as rumored) or an online music store (ditto). It's also still not clear whether those of us with UMD game collections will be able to transfer those games to the Go. Finally, still no exact word on when the new PSP will arrive (the rumor mill says fall), or for how much.
In any case, we should be getting our first look at the PSP Go during Sony's E3 keynote, slated for 11 a.m. Tuesday. Stay tuned.
