Rumorville: $99 4GB iPhone on tap?

That's the latest hot tip in the run-up to next week's Apple event in San Francisco, along with word that the new iPhones might come with storage capacities ranging from 4GB to 32GB.

Let's start with the Boy Genius Report, which got its hands on a purported 2009 handset "roadmap" from Canadian carrier Fido that includes a slide for a $99, 4GB iPhone.

BGR warns that the image in the slide (which you can check out here) "isn't the device itself," but the specs sound reasonable enough for a budget iPhone: 3G, a 2-megapixel camera (same as on the current 8GB and 16GB iPhones), 4GB of storage (natch), and—here's where things get interesting—"video calling (iChat)." Video chat has, of course, been one of the earliest and most persistent of iPhone rumors, but it's not clear if the "video calling" reference in the Fido presentation is an actual leak or just a flub.

Moving on, we've got this post from Engadget Mobile, which heard from a "trusted source" that iPhones in four configurations—4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB—just cleared the PCD Type Review Certification Board (a standards group that, as Engadget notes, certifies GSM equipment).

No mention of $99 price tag for the 4GB iPhone in the Engadget story, but it does point out that the carrier recently began offering the impressive Nokia E71x smartphone for just $99 (with a new two-year contract), so … who knows?

Personally, the rumors sounds relatively plausible—indeed, more plausible than chatter about a smaller "iPhone mini" (which might have trouble running all those iPhone apps were it to have a smaller screen resolution). The stories also make sense given the recent leaks about cheaper iPhone service plans, including one that would include a data cap for $10 less a month.

Thankfully, we have less than a week to go before Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference next Monday, where all—or most, at least—of our burning iPhone questions will be answered.

So, would you be interested in a $99 (with a two-year contract, of course) iPhone with just 4GB of storage?

Personally, I would rather pay $200 or more for the (higher specifications (including higher capacity) model. I am interested in the monthly cap data plan, if it did not crimp my normal usage too much. But I can see why other people may want to try the $99 iPhone. Yet others would rather not switch to AT&T service. On a side note about the Palm Pre: The Palm Pre is advertised as being able to sync with iTunes as if it was an iPod. So what would Pre users do if Apple decides to update iTunes (which has already happened this week) and the Pre can't sync with iTunes anymore?

As a side note I absolutely hate how many iTunes updates there are. Not even patches like most software but you have to download the whole thing. That's ridiculous especially for anyone who still has dial-up. Also, it's not even for anything big it's like download 60MB to go from 8.1.0.1.1 to 8.1.0.1.2 seriously? Ok, anyway as for $99 iphone I think a cheaper data plan would get more people more excitied

LOL. I see the kids are already bored, and summer vacation has just started. Like, how many updates for iTunes are there a year? Like, how many, like people are on dial-up? There should be, like, a minimum age limit to, like, post a comment, like.

When my contract is up, I'm getting an iphone. $100 is not too bad for me. Too bad its not on Verizon. What's wrong with dialup? Some people are too poor for broadband.

@3: I think it is awfully immature of you to laugh at others, no matter how grammatically incorrect they may be.
