WSJ: Steve Jobs "on track" to return to Apple

Nearly six months after stepping down as Apple's CEO for an extended medical leave, Steve Jobs—who was "one real sick guy" during his absence, according to a source—is on the mend, and looks set to return to work this month, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Citing a series of anonymous sources, the Journal says that Jobs "appears on track to return from medical leave this month." Some are even speculating that he might take the stage during Monday's WWDC keynote, possibly with a new iPhone in hand.

Sightings of Jobs, who announced he was stepping down in January due to a "hormone imbalance," have been few and far between. Last month, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak said he'd spoken to Jobs and that he sounded "healthy" and "energetic," but added that he didn't ask Jobs specifically about his condition.

One source who'd been regularly briefed on Jobs' health told the Journal that Jobs was "fundamentally ... starving to death over a nine-month period" because he "couldn't digest protein." However, while Jobs was "one real sick guy" at one point, he "took corrective action" and "is coming along," the source said in the Journal story.

So, will we see Jobs—hopefully no longer as gaunt as he looked last year—at the Apple keynote Monday? Industry observers seem divided on that question, although another Journal source claims that Apple is "trying to coordinate Mr. Jobs' return with a product launch of public event."

Personally, I think that the launch of a new iPhone—arguably Jobs' crowning achievement at Apple, at least since his triumphant return to Cupertino in 1997—would be the ideal time for the iconic, black-turtleneck-and-jeans-wearing CEO to return to the spotlight.

Then again, Apple might want to show that it can launch a splashy new iPhone without Jobs.

Indeed, after all the concern about whether Apple could thrive without its famous founder, the company has actually done just fine, successfully launching a refreshed line of iMacs, along with a tiny, headline-grabbing iPod Shuffle. Meanwhile, the unveiling of iPhone Software 3.0 went off without a hitch, and as the Journal notes, Apple's stock is up 68 percent since Jobs went on leave.

So, what do you think: Will the "One More Thing" on Monday be Mr. Steve Jobs himself?

I love Apple, but I have to correct you. They didn't invent the mouse or graphical interface or integrated CPU/monitor. That was done in the 1970's by Xerox. That is where Apple got the idea. Jobs just brought it to the people at a reasonable price.

I'm glad he's feeling better so he can kick Wozniak's ass if he tries to do "the worm" again.

If Steve told you mac freaks to jump off a 300 foot cliff, you'd do it without hesitation. darn if Gates told me to do something, I'd tell him where to stick it.

"hormonal imbalance"? only time i hear that is when a female is having PMS. maybe on his case it's MSB(male sperm backup). maybe that's also the culprit with his problem of not being able to digest protein. too much protein buildup ;)

It would be good to see Jobs, and see that he is well, but making the argument that the company does not depend on one man, and proving that over the last 6 months, why throw it away by having Jobs do an intro to a new iPhone? He probably didn't have as much input on it anyway, due to his leave. Hey, I enjoy a good S Jobs show as much as anyone, but too much could be counter productive. Yawn... Windows 7 ! You have a HUGE group of business people who LEARNED that it's OK NOT to upgrade Windows. Vista taught them that! Meanwhile, every MAC upgrade is snapped up and installed quickly! I was working on an OS 10.3 machine this week, and it seemed ancient! I couldn't find all the OS tools and functions I am now used to!

Can't stop laughing @ alexgannis. Windows7 ?? Hahahahahaha. I've beta tested that POS & while better than Vista, that doesn't actually say much. Its easy when the bar is real low (Vista) to be better, but to actually compete with OS X, M$ has a lonnnnnnnnnnng way to go.

I wish Mr Jobs the very best and a Healthly recovery. As for the Windows and Linux thing I love my new Windows7 BUT at the same time it's like the old man said if everyone wanted the same thing they'd all want my wife and the other old man said if everyone wanted the same thing NO ONE would want your wife, So goes life

The language Jobs uses is so silly----"On track". "OK everybody, keep looking at me!"

iPhone is a toy and a fad like Talking Elmo. It's not a serious work tool.

Mac or PC? That's the big question. NOOOOOOTTTTT. PC running on Mac OS. I don't spend the extra five hundred dollars the Mac Fashionistas like to spend on an apple logo so they can look "hip" and "cool," and I don't have to deal with the piece of GARBAGE called Windows. The best of both world. Good Luck Steve Job.....

Windows 7 will not be news unless you are a dull person.

I sincerely hope Uncle Steve is better. Apple is just not the same without him and he would be sorely missed. Still, though, he isn't getting any younger so I hope in his return he has a more limited role perhaps, rather than running day-to-day operations.
