Want a new iPhone (in the U.S., anyway)? You'd better be an AT&T subscriber, then. How about the Palm Pre? Only on Sprint. Craving the BlackBerry Storm? Verizon Wireless—and only Verizon Wireless—has it.

Even if Verizon started selling the iPhone, if a person is in the middle of a contract, it would still be cheaper to jump ship to AT&T. The $200 new contract savings would out weigh the $150 contract cancellation cost. With AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile (I haven't seen Sprint's intent) upgrading to 4G/LTE soon, unlocking phones for use on other carriers will probably be even more common. Getting an iPhone to work on T-Mobile is pretty simple.
You neglect to mention that the exclusivity deals invariably work their way down to the consumer in the form of cheaper prices.
It also seems that many of the "exclusive" phones are available on another carrier with a different name. Blackjack/Ace come to mind.
My question is "Which of the three senators (John Kerry of Massachusetts, Byron Dorgan of North Dakota, and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota) wantes a Palm Pre and was not able to get one through their carrier? This came up during the Storm launch too. Big hairy deal. McDonalds sells the Big Mac and BK the Wopper, we don't have the Gov't allowing Taco Bell to carry Whopper do we? Why do we pay these senators? Get to work on important issues. Border control, Taxes, Sinking Economy, etc.
