The iPod rumor mill has gone into overdrive with word of an Apple press-only event set for next week. Will we finally see the touchscreen, widescreen, Wi-Fi, kitchen-sink iPod? And will the Beatles be involved?

Apple has always cultivated an air of mystery around its press events, and the teasing invite for the September 5 event—complete with a dancing iPod guy and the tagline, "The beat goes on"—is no exception. MacRumors points out that the Beatles used that line in its final press release, so...does that means the Beatles catalog is finally coming to iTunes? Steve Jobs has dropped innumerable hints about the Fab Four in the past several months, but we're still waiting for the Yellow Submarine to dock in the iTunes Store. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, of course, all eyes are on Apple's iPod line. Gina recently blogged about all the widescreen, touchscreen, Mac OS X-based iPod Nano rumors, and now MacRumors is reporting that the Wi-Fi iPod rumors are re-(re-)surfacing.

Expect to see even more iPod whispers, leaked details, and Photoshop mockups in the next few days; personally, I'm relieved that we'll finally have some facts to chew on come next Wednesday. We'll have a full report on the announcements shortly after the press conference (slated for 10 a.m. PST).

I've already seen a leak of the new menu system that will be incorporated in the new iPods (supposedly). Looks cool.
