The lines for the iPhone 3G S may not have been as long as they were for last year's 3G, but Apple claims that the new model is selling at the same blistering pace. Also: Apple offers $30 store credits for those suffering activation woes.
First up: The crowds may not have been as big or chaotic on Friday as they were at last year's launch, but based on analyst estimates and Apple's own claims, the iPhone 3G S is a hit nonetheless.
Apple announced Monday morning that it sold a million iPhone 3G S units worldwide in just three days, matching last year's figures for the iPhone 3G.
Analysts were a bit more conservative with their 3G S numbers. Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster estimates that Apple sold about 750,000 units of the new iPhone, with sales tilting toward the 16GB model (57 percent, versus 43 percent for the 32GB version), according to Fortune's Apple 2.0 blog.
But judging even from the more cautions estimates, Apple clearly has reason to pump its fists today. After all, the conventional wisdom just a week ago was that Apple would be lucky to clear 500,000 iPhone 3G Ss during its launch weekend.
Apple's triumphant press release Monday is notable for another reason: a direct quote from Steve Jobs, who's due to return to Apple after his six-month medical leave. Jobs also made headlines over the weekend after the Wall Street Journal reported that he'd undergone a liver transplant in April.
Meanwhile, the high-fives at Apple HQ were interrupted by complaints of long activation delays for some iPhone 3G S customers, myself included.
While many said they managed to get their new iPhones activated within minutes, others—especially those who pre-ordered and got their handsets delivered to their homes—were hit with a message in iTunes saying that it might "take up to 48 hours" to activate their devices due to "current activation volumes."
It's not clear how widespread the activation problems were, although I saw plenty of complaints on Apple forums over the weekends—along with a variety of proposed remedies, including turning your iPhone on and off, removing and replacing the SIM card, swapping out the 3G S's SIM with one from an old iPhone 3G, and yelling at AT&T customer support (always fun, if not terribly constructive).
What finally worked for me was calling AT&T on Saturday and (courteously) giving them the IMEI and ICCID numbers for my new phone (both numbers are located on the bottom of the iPhone box). Once I read off the numbers and the service rep added them to my account, it was a simple matter of turning my 3G S off, waiting a few moments, and turning it back on again—and within seconds, the phone was activated.
So … was it a matter of high server volume, or a disconnect between AT&T and Apple? Whatever the reason, Apple began handing out $30 store credits via e-mail Sunday (if not earlier, according to Gizmodo) to frustrated iPhone 3G S owners still awaiting activation. It's not clear who exactly qualifies for the $30 credit or if there's an application process—I know I didn't get one, but I didn't have to wait all that long to get my iPhone activated, either.
Show of hands: Who bought an iPhone 3G S over the weekend? Have any trouble activating it? Let us know.

My Iphone 3G S hasn't even gotten to me yet but seeing how everyone else is going through their own troubles I hope I will be fine by the time it get's to me today.
Less than 10 minutes in line and instant activation. Works like a charm. I am a first timer.
The only problem I had was synching back to my 3g. Not all my info was copied onto the new phone, had to do it 3 times. Called the support line waited 25 minutes for the guy to tell me you have to restore and do it over. The same process I did twice before I called.
i upgraded my 3g to the new 3g s on saturday at a local apple store, whole process took about 10 minutes and i left with the phone activated, no problems, very happy.
No problems with mine and I didn't think the iPhone could get any better, but it did! ANother Grand Slam for Apple. I guess all their competitors can do is try to keep up.
I got mine on Friday early afternoon and was able to activate withing minutes. Guess I am also one of the lucky ones. I was afraid I would have trouble.
Maybe I'm odd gal our or something. I had my iPhone 32GB 3GS activated and in use since Friday morning 7:30 AM. I only stood in line about 15 minutes, and have had no problems with the phone itself. User difficulties with Voice Control and Video editing ~ but that's not Apple's fault .. haha. I Don't HOWEVER see a difference in battery life.
at&t is running outta bandwidth. thats why everything is so buggy.
I pre-ordered my iPhone June 10th. I received it Friday, the 19th. I followed the automated telephone activation instructions as described on the document supplied in the box and then finished activating the phone by plugging it into my computer and launching iTunes with no wait or problems at all. Sorry to hear others have not been so lucky.
Still upset over upgrade pricing with AT&T and Apple to really care...
3G S I have not even considered one since I still have a 3G that keeps freezing up that's less than three months old..Think I don't feel screwed?? AT&T or Apple just don't care. Looks like it's time to move on. Good Luck!!!
I got two on friday and no problem.....started within seconds at the store in Orlando
I ordered through ATT, and called from my house phone...my phone was activated AND my t-mobile number was ported over before I hung up the phone with the ATT rep.
I was one of the lucky ones who received my Iphone 3Gs on Friday by noon. I had major trouble attempting to activate my Iphone. I was on the phone with both ATT and Apple through out Friday and Saturday. I ended up having to bring my phone to ATT directly Saturday to have the SIM card replaced! ATT was able to fix the problem
My iPhone 3GS was delivered to my house at 9:15 a.m. on Friday morning. I swapped my sim card out from my BlackBerry Bold (absolute piece of total s*it by the way) and I've had zero problems with my phone. No delays, bugs, glitches or anything.
how is the wifi buggy? It's never given me an issue on any of the iPhones. Activation took a few hours, big deal. When 1,000,000 are buying the phone, and add to that the 3.0 OS update for the previous phones, there are going to be some delays.
no MMS till earliest late summer
No problem activating mine. The internet connection on the 3GS is blazing fast.
Don't wait for activation! Call AT & T and have them activate your phone! Trust me, your phone will not get activated by waiting around!

Bought mine Friday morning first thing, switched carriers and all from Sprint (because they would not sell me the palm pre) and I am very pleased. I have had no issues what-so-ever.. just pure technological bliss! The iphone is amazing!!! 3 days now and I already have 64 apps downloaded and ready to roll.. nothing can top it!
