iPhone roundup: Apple claims 1M sold, issues refunds for activation delays

The lines for the iPhone 3G S may not have been as long as they were for last year's 3G, but Apple claims that the new model is selling at the same blistering pace. Also: Apple offers $30 store credits for those suffering activation woes.

First up: The crowds may not have been as big or chaotic on Friday as they were at last year's launch, but based on analyst estimates and Apple's own claims, the iPhone 3G S is a hit nonetheless.

Apple announced Monday morning that it sold a million iPhone 3G S units worldwide in just three days, matching last year's figures for the iPhone 3G.

Analysts were a bit more conservative with their 3G S numbers. Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster estimates that Apple sold about 750,000 units of the new iPhone, with sales tilting toward the 16GB model (57 percent, versus 43 percent for the 32GB version), according to Fortune's Apple 2.0 blog.

But judging even from the more cautions estimates, Apple clearly has reason to pump its fists today. After all, the conventional wisdom just a week ago was that Apple would be lucky to clear 500,000 iPhone 3G Ss during its launch weekend.

Apple's triumphant press release Monday is notable for another reason: a direct quote from Steve Jobs, who's due to return to Apple after his six-month medical leave. Jobs also made headlines over the weekend after the Wall Street Journal reported that he'd undergone a liver transplant in April.

Meanwhile, the high-fives at Apple HQ were interrupted by complaints of long activation delays for some iPhone 3G S customers, myself included.

While many said they managed to get their new iPhones activated within minutes, others—especially those who pre-ordered and got their handsets delivered to their homes—were hit with a message in iTunes saying that it might "take up to 48 hours" to activate their devices due to "current activation volumes."

It's not clear how widespread the activation problems were, although I saw plenty of complaints on Apple forums over the weekends—along with a variety of proposed remedies, including turning your iPhone on and off, removing and replacing the SIM card, swapping out the 3G S's SIM with one from an old iPhone 3G, and yelling at AT&T customer support (always fun, if not terribly constructive).

What finally worked for me was calling AT&T on Saturday and (courteously) giving them the IMEI and ICCID numbers for my new phone (both numbers are located on the bottom of the iPhone box). Once I read off the numbers and the service rep added them to my account, it was a simple matter of turning my 3G S off, waiting a few moments, and turning it back on again—and within seconds, the phone was activated.

So … was it a matter of high server volume, or a disconnect between AT&T and Apple? Whatever the reason, Apple began handing out $30 store credits via e-mail Sunday (if not earlier, according to Gizmodo) to frustrated iPhone 3G S owners still awaiting activation. It's not clear who exactly qualifies for the $30 credit or if there's an application process—I know I didn't get one, but I didn't have to wait all that long to get my iPhone activated, either.

Show of hands: Who bought an iPhone 3G S over the weekend? Have any trouble activating it? Let us know.

Apple SUCKS! I broke my 3G 16GB phone and took it to the Apple store for repairs. I just needed the outside glass replaced. Apple said they would repair the phone for $400 -- the price I paid for it in the first place. They do not repair iPhones. I thought I would be able to purchase the new iPhone over the weekend for $199. Nope! Thats only for new customers. Their old (LOYAL) customers would have to wait before they could upgrade. I could purchase the newer model for $399. Like I said, APPLE SUCKS!

It took me 10 minutes from the time I arrived at the main Apple store in San Francisco Friday morning to have my 32GB 3GS in my hand. The phone was activated and working less than 20 minutes later.

I ordered a 16GB 3G S on 6/16, and AT&T just NOW started processing the order. No emails with $30 credits from Apple, probably since I bought it through AT&T instead of Apple, although I WAS on the Apple store site the same day... AT&T can't give me a ship date -- but others have gotten theirs already? I want one, and I want it NOW!!! :-O

Told me it would take 7-14 days to get my new 32g, they told me they would reserve one for me and then never called me back. I guess I will just have to wait a couple of weeks hopefully to not complain. This is my first iphone.

I purchased an iPhone 32gS Friday morning from my local AT&T Store, no lines. Phone activation was performed while my paperwork was being finalized and I was making calls before I left the store. Excellent experience!

Got it Friday. It was activated before I even knew it was being activated. It's lovely and works just like it's supposed to.

Got mine on Friday and was activated instantly! I wasnt expecting such a huge jump in performance going from 1G to 3GS but have been pleasantly surprised. Although I do see how the battery sucks compared to my original.

I went to an AT&T store at 8:30am on Friday. I was out with my new Iphone by 09:25...activated and all. So no problems here. WiFI works great! They said MMSing will be available in August sometime.

I did not have much trouble activating my new iPhone on Friday; I received it around 10 am in the morning and updated it using iTunes. One of my co-workers who activated his in the store told me that I needed to restart the phone and once I did that it worked right away. BTW, I love the new 3G S iPhone :-)

The iphone would be better if another company offered it. The AT&T network sucks.

me and my friend bought the phone at best buy and had no problem getting it activated, also i see no bugs for the software and the wifi for some reason connects even faster. I had the phone since day one 2 years ago and it is the BEST phone out there.

Yeah I stood there for 2 hours it sucked ass but the iPhone 3GS is the sweetest phone ever so I'm over it.

No trouble, they activated it in-store. The Falls location in Miami, FL.

As far as MMS goes, I looked into that, and AT&T said the feature was included in the 3.0 update but that it won't be active until their service can support it later in the summer.

No sweat on activating. Instantly, once I rec'd service. My Apple retailer handled the line poorly, however. They split the line in 2 parts on Friday. One with "stand-by's": those who started the purchase online and had to complete at the retailer or just plain walk in's and those who actually reserved a phone to be put aside at that location. This location had 5 people working the reserved line and 2 people working the standby line. People who showed up an hour after me had purchased and gone before I even got service.
