The lines for the iPhone 3G S may not have been as long as they were for last year's 3G, but Apple claims that the new model is selling at the same blistering pace. Also: Apple offers $30 store credits for those suffering activation woes.
First up: The crowds may not have been as big or chaotic on Friday as they were at last year's launch, but based on analyst estimates and Apple's own claims, the iPhone 3G S is a hit nonetheless.
Apple announced Monday morning that it sold a million iPhone 3G S units worldwide in just three days, matching last year's figures for the iPhone 3G.
Analysts were a bit more conservative with their 3G S numbers. Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster estimates that Apple sold about 750,000 units of the new iPhone, with sales tilting toward the 16GB model (57 percent, versus 43 percent for the 32GB version), according to Fortune's Apple 2.0 blog.
But judging even from the more cautions estimates, Apple clearly has reason to pump its fists today. After all, the conventional wisdom just a week ago was that Apple would be lucky to clear 500,000 iPhone 3G Ss during its launch weekend.
Apple's triumphant press release Monday is notable for another reason: a direct quote from Steve Jobs, who's due to return to Apple after his six-month medical leave. Jobs also made headlines over the weekend after the Wall Street Journal reported that he'd undergone a liver transplant in April.
Meanwhile, the high-fives at Apple HQ were interrupted by complaints of long activation delays for some iPhone 3G S customers, myself included.
While many said they managed to get their new iPhones activated within minutes, others—especially those who pre-ordered and got their handsets delivered to their homes—were hit with a message in iTunes saying that it might "take up to 48 hours" to activate their devices due to "current activation volumes."
It's not clear how widespread the activation problems were, although I saw plenty of complaints on Apple forums over the weekends—along with a variety of proposed remedies, including turning your iPhone on and off, removing and replacing the SIM card, swapping out the 3G S's SIM with one from an old iPhone 3G, and yelling at AT&T customer support (always fun, if not terribly constructive).
What finally worked for me was calling AT&T on Saturday and (courteously) giving them the IMEI and ICCID numbers for my new phone (both numbers are located on the bottom of the iPhone box). Once I read off the numbers and the service rep added them to my account, it was a simple matter of turning my 3G S off, waiting a few moments, and turning it back on again—and within seconds, the phone was activated.
So … was it a matter of high server volume, or a disconnect between AT&T and Apple? Whatever the reason, Apple began handing out $30 store credits via e-mail Sunday (if not earlier, according to Gizmodo) to frustrated iPhone 3G S owners still awaiting activation. It's not clear who exactly qualifies for the $30 credit or if there's an application process—I know I didn't get one, but I didn't have to wait all that long to get my iPhone activated, either.
Show of hands: Who bought an iPhone 3G S over the weekend? Have any trouble activating it? Let us know.

I tried activating mine on Friday night (I preordered it) and it finally became active around 2:30pm today. I received an email about receiving a $30 iTunes credit yesterday at 7am. Just waiting on the actual email with the info for the credit now.
It took me 15 minutes to purchase and activate a 32G 3Gs phone at an ATT kiosk om Friday morning at 9am. no complaints here! It's working great.
I am unable to download me contacts from my old gen1 iPhone. Any ideas. I have synced it and that did not work. Help
Got mine on Friday afternoon. On the drive home both my old iPhone and new iPhone had no service but once I plugged my new phone into iTunes, it was good to go. No problem at all. We did have some trouble trying to convert my calling plan and my partner's calling plan over to a family plan. The Apple store employee tried to do it but didn't want to mess things up so he recommended we visit an AT&T store to make sure it was done right. No biggie. Although I found the original way of activating the iPhone (taking it home and doing it) much easier.

I got my IPhone 3Gs and have not had any problems. Its working much faster than my Iphone 3G. Im very happy with the product and also Best Buy service.
Got the 3G-S opening day. Activated in-store, and walked out 5 mintues later with a perfectly-working iPhone. If I were on ebay, I'd give 'em an A+++. Perfect Transaction. Wondering what th hubbub is all about.
I pre-ordered my iPhone earlier in the week, walked into the AT&T store Friday morning and discovered that 'my' iPhone hadn't come in yet...total bummer, so I'm waiting on a 'standard freight' delivery now...
I have a Gen 1 iPhone and I can't load my contacts from my old phone to my new. Any ideas? I have synced and that did not work. Help!!!
You guys are gonna get left behind if you don't have Flash working in the next year. Windows mobile has it, which should be a ginormous embarassment to you at Apple. Just keep denying it, like hiding the fact your CEO was sick so your stock wouldn't tank. I'm a MAC user from way back, and I'm tempted to jump ship cause you don't support Flash...be warned, Apple. Your fanbase can turn on a dime.
$30 store credit where almost everything costs several hundred dollars. Whoop dee doo.
Of course they sold the same number as last year. It's the same million people every year that are lame enough to camp out to buy a phone on the day it comes out.
Bought it at the Apple store. I was in and out of there in about a half hour with an activated phone that has worked very well since.
I got mine delivered to my home, activated around 7pm that night on Friday. Went smoothly. So what's wrong? I do want the $30 credit though. :)
We pre-ordered 1 iphone, when picking up on Friday.. MAYOR lines 2-3 hour wait, and the line for none-pre-ordered customers was shorter! and they were allowing 1 pre-order, 1 non pre-order in at a time, so that was just wrong. came back a couple hours later and was in and out of the store in about 30 minutes. Next day went to the store and got another iphone within 15 minutes! However anyone that waited and pre-ordered should get a credit.
I got mine in the mail Friday from the pre-order and it activated within a minute. Guess I was lucky!
Picked up my 16G on Friday morning and was out of the Apple store in 15 minutes... VERY happy consumer here!
MMSing won't be available until late summer according to AT&T
activation delays?? co-workers and myself are still waiting for our iphones via the corporate pre-order. It's probably more on AT&t's end than apple, as our corporate reps seem to suck really hard - and I work for a large company.
