iPhone roundup: Apple claims 1M sold, issues refunds for activation delays

The lines for the iPhone 3G S may not have been as long as they were for last year's 3G, but Apple claims that the new model is selling at the same blistering pace. Also: Apple offers $30 store credits for those suffering activation woes.

First up: The crowds may not have been as big or chaotic on Friday as they were at last year's launch, but based on analyst estimates and Apple's own claims, the iPhone 3G S is a hit nonetheless.

Apple announced Monday morning that it sold a million iPhone 3G S units worldwide in just three days, matching last year's figures for the iPhone 3G.

Analysts were a bit more conservative with their 3G S numbers. Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster estimates that Apple sold about 750,000 units of the new iPhone, with sales tilting toward the 16GB model (57 percent, versus 43 percent for the 32GB version), according to Fortune's Apple 2.0 blog.

But judging even from the more cautions estimates, Apple clearly has reason to pump its fists today. After all, the conventional wisdom just a week ago was that Apple would be lucky to clear 500,000 iPhone 3G Ss during its launch weekend.

Apple's triumphant press release Monday is notable for another reason: a direct quote from Steve Jobs, who's due to return to Apple after his six-month medical leave. Jobs also made headlines over the weekend after the Wall Street Journal reported that he'd undergone a liver transplant in April.

Meanwhile, the high-fives at Apple HQ were interrupted by complaints of long activation delays for some iPhone 3G S customers, myself included.

While many said they managed to get their new iPhones activated within minutes, others—especially those who pre-ordered and got their handsets delivered to their homes—were hit with a message in iTunes saying that it might "take up to 48 hours" to activate their devices due to "current activation volumes."

It's not clear how widespread the activation problems were, although I saw plenty of complaints on Apple forums over the weekends—along with a variety of proposed remedies, including turning your iPhone on and off, removing and replacing the SIM card, swapping out the 3G S's SIM with one from an old iPhone 3G, and yelling at AT&T customer support (always fun, if not terribly constructive).

What finally worked for me was calling AT&T on Saturday and (courteously) giving them the IMEI and ICCID numbers for my new phone (both numbers are located on the bottom of the iPhone box). Once I read off the numbers and the service rep added them to my account, it was a simple matter of turning my 3G S off, waiting a few moments, and turning it back on again—and within seconds, the phone was activated.

So … was it a matter of high server volume, or a disconnect between AT&T and Apple? Whatever the reason, Apple began handing out $30 store credits via e-mail Sunday (if not earlier, according to Gizmodo) to frustrated iPhone 3G S owners still awaiting activation. It's not clear who exactly qualifies for the $30 credit or if there's an application process—I know I didn't get one, but I didn't have to wait all that long to get my iPhone activated, either.

Show of hands: Who bought an iPhone 3G S over the weekend? Have any trouble activating it? Let us know.

I pre-ordered it and had the same issue. It said activation could take a couple of days. Apparently the SIM card (ICCD) number they had on my account was different from what was on my phone. Got it fixed after about an hour on the phone with customer service. They initally called apple to find out what was wrong with my order. Works fine now. I think this might just be with phones which were pre-ordered

Bought my 32MB 3G S on Friday at 7AM. It was up and running before Iwas even out of the store. Hasn't faltered once.

I might buy an iPhone if it didn't come with AT&T service. Their service stinks in my area and I'm not going to deal with the headaches that come with the dropped calls and spotty service. When is Apple going to get smart and let other companies carry their phone?

What about those of us trying to download the new software and having the phones crash only to have an Apple rep tell us we'll have to come in the NEXT DAY for an appointment?!?!

I was at the AT&T store Friday for 3 hours trying to get my iPhone activated. All they managed to do was turn it into a brick. I had to go to the Apple store on Saturday and raise a fuss to get seen without an appointment. After about a 30 minute wait, the Apple rep just gave me a new iPhone and activated it. I'm waiting for my iTunes $30 credit, but doubt I'll see it.

Preordered and picked it up at an ATT store. Worked when I walked out.

Mine activated pretty quickly but it took over an hour for them to get through to their fraud prevention department to approve the credit check. I can't believe they say this battery lasts twice as long as previous models - it still seems to go pretty quick.

Although I have a Nokia, I haven't been able to get my email or internet all day. Usually my Nokia trumps reception well above my iPhone-suckered friends. Looks like I'm the real ATT victim again. That's the ATT philosophy: "sign 'em up first and make excuses about the network later..."

Why bother with the 3G S? I have a 3g and love it. With the 3.0.0 upgrade, Im happy, don't need a compass or video recorder...

Um, My iTouch works perfectly-- apart from the occasional freeze when I try and play music and play an app at the same time. Otherwise, works great; can't wait to get an iPhone--freaking Apple going exclusive! That's the only reason i cant get one--ATT. What, I'm guessing like 40-50% of your buyers are teenagers; teenagers are on their parents plan, and if your are on verizon, youre screwed!

I bought an Iphone a few years ago and have used it as a Pre-Pay as you go contract. I bought a new SIM card and called AT&T, they took my monthly payment of $59 and the rep said "OK.. SHUT OFF YOUR IPHONE and turn it back on to reboot" so clearly he knew it was an IPhone...it didn't work so he suggested I log onto ITunes...guess what, as of last week, ITunes no longer activated Prepaid service so now I have a monthly prepay contract and a useless $300 IPhone that I can't activate...there is definately a disconnect between AT&T and ITunes...thanks Mr. Jobs.

I supposedly reserved one from Apple, but was kicked out of line while waiting at the store in Towson, MD...two other "reblerousers" and I ditched the stupid Apple line for the AT&T store line and were in and out within 10 minutes....booooooo to the Apple store on this one!!!
