Sony: 60GB PlayStation 3 Stock is All Gone

If you're hankering for a PlayStation 3 but you only want to pay $500 for the console, your time may be running out.

Sony has announced that as of this week, it has shipped the last of its $499 PS3 consoles to retailers (this according to gaming site GamePro). Just to recap, Sony dropped the price of the 60GB model after bowing an 80GB version of the console (priced at $599) in July, but then said that it would stop selling the cheaper 60GB PS3 once its supplies had run out.

Sony's announcement doesn’t mean that the 60GB PS3 is no longer available; there are still plenty of consoles on store shelves. However, once those boxes are gone, they're gone. How long till that happens? Hard to say, though I suspect Sony is hoping that there's a run on the bargain-priced (well, relatively speaking) 60GB console now that it's on the endangered list.

So, here's the question: if you only want to spend $500 on a PS3, should you run out and buy the 60GB version while it's still on the shelves, or should you wait and hope Sony drops the price of the 80GB PS3 once the 60GB version is sold out? Sony's been sending out mixed signals on the point, and it denied that the initial 60GB PS3 price cut was happening until practically the day it did. It's a crapshoot.

yay, no information. Sony screwed themselves with this console... the whole history on the PS3 has been horrible.

Sony is stupid by Xing out the 20 GB they lost a lot of money. They keep pushing the games back and once they come out they there not what they cracked up to be. Most of the Ps only games are going to other consoles so more money is lost there. They not even putting in nothing new with the 80 GB it’s just like the 60 GB. Whoever gets it is just as stupid as Sony for making it. When it’s cheaper to buy a 60 GB and an 80 GB hard drive or an external hard drive either way it works and is cheaper.

why don't they offer a PS3 with no HDD? $400-$450 for everything thats included with the 80 gig, but without the actual 80 gigs. a bare-bones PS3; you just have to get a 2.5" laptop drive, which are available in sizes up to 200+ gigs.
