3G survey: Sprint and Verizon neck-and-neck, AT&T lags in reliability

The editors at PC World teamed up with wireless testing firm Novarum to take a "single-day snapshot" of nationwide 3G wireless performance. The results? Verizon Wireless gets the "speed demon" award and Sprint leads the pack in reliability, while AT&T suffers from a dependability gap.

First of all, hats off to PC World for taking the time and effort for such a thorough wireless study, which encompasses three of the biggest U.S. carriers (no results for T-Mobile, unfortunately), 13 cities, 283 testing sites, and nearly 5,500 individual tests. Many of us wireless reviewers only have the resources to test reception by waving a test phone around our back yards, so it's refreshing to see a systematic, coast-to-coast survey.

Anyway, PC World has a chart rating the average download and upload speeds of each carrier for specific cities, along with a percentage reliability rating. The results vary from city to city, naturally, with Verizon dominating in the eastern and central states and Sprint coming out ahead in the West.

Overall, though, PC World gave Verizon high marks for its "good mix of speed and reliability," plus a chart-topping average download speed of 951Kbps. But while Sprint's average download speed of 808Kbps "wasn't flashy," the carrier wins out in dependability, scoring an overall 90.5 reliability ratings.

Then there's AT&T, which placed second to Verizon in terms of average download speeds (812Kbps) but lagged badly in the reliability department—just 68 percent. Ouch.

AT&T's relatively poor reliability score in the PC World survey will certainly fuel the fire of U.S. iPhone users—myself included—who regularly complain about spotty 3G reception. Indeed, I've lost track of how many times my iPhone (showing five bars of reception, mind you) stubbornly refuses to pull down a Web page, while a test Verizon or Sprint phone manages to surf just fine from the exact same location.

Speaking of "more bars in more places," the PC World editors have some interesting things to say about signal-strength bars—namely, that they have little do with whether you'll get good 3G performance. That's because the bars only tell you if your phone has a good connection to a nearby cell tower, not whether your carrier's "backhaul" system is pulling a steady flow of data from the Internet at large, PC World explains. (Now you tell me.)

Make sure to check out PC World's full survey, along with complete results for all the 13 test cities.

So, how's the 3G performance in your area? Who's your carrier? Let us know.

I have had Sprint for 2 years now. I have never EVER had a dropped call, refusal to dial out or no signal at all. While my parents have AT&T and for some unexplained reason it does not work inside one of the grocery stores here at all. They get No Signal, and I get full bars. I love Sprint even more now that I have the Palm Pre.

Thanks for revealing the "backhaul" situation with 3G technology. Most people still don't know this and need to. The companies need to catch up with this issue...they make enough money so come on.

The ATT service is poor at best. I have ATT service and a 2nd Verizon line. The verizon line works wherever whenever. ATT works in only 1/4 of my home. I have to be in the kitchen or close to it or else i dont get reception.

I have only one problem with my sprint 3g in that streamlining videos can cause you to go over the plan limits and accrue some hellacious overage charges. Through on line tech support I was able to have 1/2 of the charges dropped on my first bill. Live and learn. But the convenience is perfect for my on-line courses and my personal business applications. Thanks Sprint.

At&t 3g service is poor in most areas I think they piggy back from others. If I could do it over I would not get AT&T , stinks , slow even when you get 5 bars.

As a formre Verizon customer and now AT&T completely agree with these findings.. Tethering my Blackberry, with AT&T is very inferior to Verizon. Verizon's data network is so much more reliable, if they only had the phones that AT&T has.

Having had both Nextel and Verizon both ... I have to say that Verizon wins hands down. Its worth it to me to naver drop a call and never be told that " You signed for the plan, and now you have to pay the bill". In a recent problem with Verizon, a billing issue ... a HUGE billing issue was resolved by Mario and the staff at verizon with appologies and COMPLETE customer satisfaction. All I can say to Sprint is to seek Mario out and make him your CEO ... not Dan. Then, and only then would I ever think about coming back to Sprint! And as for Apple ... Never had it and have no interest in AT&T.

if you want feedback on 3g performance, why don't you post some detail on how we can measure this meaningfully on our phones? what is the easiest way to do this? is there a standard test for benchmarking?

I just got the iPhone 3GS in white 32GB and my iPhone has been getting really hot at some occasions, but other times, my battery drains really fast when it's not even in use. So far, no color of discoleration yet, but it looks like it's coming soon.

Verizon phones sucks but excellent network. ATT is overprice. Sprint 3G is exceptional but customer service sucks.

  • 41 Posted by fromandrewvanbeek on Fri Jul 3, 2009 9:12PM EDT Report Abuse

I am outraged how ATT can continue to use the best phone (iPhone) and keep underperforming. All that potential is being wasted. Give Verizon or Sprint the iPhone and we can finally see some competetive plans, lower prices, and much better reliability.

I love love love my SPRINT INSTINCT phone! Super fast internet and navigation....with up to date traffic delays/incidents. It has everything...very reliable!

I live in southern Alabama, and have AT&T and an iPhone. I check my download speed often and regularly get 1200 to 1300 kps if not slightly better on their 3G network. Plus have pretty good coverage.
