3G survey: Sprint and Verizon neck-and-neck, AT&T lags in reliability

The editors at PC World teamed up with wireless testing firm Novarum to take a "single-day snapshot" of nationwide 3G wireless performance. The results? Verizon Wireless gets the "speed demon" award and Sprint leads the pack in reliability, while AT&T suffers from a dependability gap.

First of all, hats off to PC World for taking the time and effort for such a thorough wireless study, which encompasses three of the biggest U.S. carriers (no results for T-Mobile, unfortunately), 13 cities, 283 testing sites, and nearly 5,500 individual tests. Many of us wireless reviewers only have the resources to test reception by waving a test phone around our back yards, so it's refreshing to see a systematic, coast-to-coast survey.

Anyway, PC World has a chart rating the average download and upload speeds of each carrier for specific cities, along with a percentage reliability rating. The results vary from city to city, naturally, with Verizon dominating in the eastern and central states and Sprint coming out ahead in the West.

Overall, though, PC World gave Verizon high marks for its "good mix of speed and reliability," plus a chart-topping average download speed of 951Kbps. But while Sprint's average download speed of 808Kbps "wasn't flashy," the carrier wins out in dependability, scoring an overall 90.5 reliability ratings.

Then there's AT&T, which placed second to Verizon in terms of average download speeds (812Kbps) but lagged badly in the reliability department—just 68 percent. Ouch.

AT&T's relatively poor reliability score in the PC World survey will certainly fuel the fire of U.S. iPhone users—myself included—who regularly complain about spotty 3G reception. Indeed, I've lost track of how many times my iPhone (showing five bars of reception, mind you) stubbornly refuses to pull down a Web page, while a test Verizon or Sprint phone manages to surf just fine from the exact same location.

Speaking of "more bars in more places," the PC World editors have some interesting things to say about signal-strength bars—namely, that they have little do with whether you'll get good 3G performance. That's because the bars only tell you if your phone has a good connection to a nearby cell tower, not whether your carrier's "backhaul" system is pulling a steady flow of data from the Internet at large, PC World explains. (Now you tell me.)

Make sure to check out PC World's full survey, along with complete results for all the 13 test cities.

So, how's the 3G performance in your area? Who's your carrier? Let us know.

The only reason I don't have an iPhone is AT&T! I have a connect card with AT&T and it sucks ... seriously here in Charlottesville, VA it really blows! I'm in town and I barely have two bars! I've never gotten more than two bars ... and it's not 3G, so it's like dial up only worse! Somebody at AT&T must have pictures of Steve Jobs with a sheep or something ... it's the only explanation I can think of!

an iphone would be great for verizon, other phone carriers would have some real tough competition. service and price is great with verizon. i used to be with nextel before sprint took them over and gave you no service with your phone!

Talk to ATT and change to Uverse; ATT & Dish were copartners. Even if u committed to the Dish they'll give u $200. to switch u to uverse. I had committed to the Dish and within a week of being with them ATT took care of it and I didn't pay the $200.00 disconnect fee. Good luck

Verizon is the best. I think it's stupid just to go over to AT&T for an iPhone, just get an iTouch.. I got Verizon, and it's got great signal. Plus, I think apple should make another phone cuz, the iPhones gettin pretty boring. Also, there are better phones out there (other than not having apps) The LG Dare, The EnV Touch, the LG Versa, the Samsung Glyde is okay... Many cool phones, instead of the iPhone....

I have an AT&T phone and I have never had such terrible service issues. Where I live, it's useless where my Verizon pay as you go is quite usable. I always get 5 bars but no connection. My line is "AT&T, No Bars in More Places."

I was a faithful Cingular customer. As soon as AT&T took over, I noticed a decline in the overall service. Especially dropped calls. As a business owner who travels the entire US, I need a service that is reliable. I switched to Verizon and have never had a dropped call. I also prefer the BlackBerry Storm over the iPhone.

AT&T is the only reason I will not get an iPhone. What was APPLE thinking.

The bottom line here is each carrier has something that is irritating about it, and your preference is what ties you to each company. I personally think Verizon has better coverage in phone calls but they are high as giraffe butt and also have terrible customer service. I left Sprint a long time ago for many reasons, and now have to deal with AT&T because yes, I am obsessed with my Iphone...capitalism rules in these United States people, so until we can live without our gadgets and crappy service, all of these companies will prevail.

I had a blackberry storm for 30 days, In those 30 days I would run through speed tests against the iphone edge network, which I lost 95% of the time. I am really suprised at this test because it hasnt been my experience at all. I must say I love my Iphone!!!!!!!

I love my iphone, but i hate at&t. I drop calls all the time, sometimes i wont even receive calls from other people. I live in the middle of downtown Indianapolis, there is no reason whatsoever that i should not have great signal, all the time. I wish that Verizon would get on the ball and come out with some decent phones, or at least talk to apple.
