Sony's "Party-shot" dock takes pictures of everyone in the room, automatically

Remember when you could wear a lampshade at a weekend party and pretty much get away with it—well, save for a wicked hangover? Those days are over, thanks to this new, all-seeing, and tireless "automatic photographer" from Sony.

Spotted by Engadget and set for release in September, the "Party-shot" IPT-DS1 camera dock ($150) represents the ultimate nightmare for those with a horror of having their bad behavior documented on Facebook, for all to see.

Compatible with "nearly" any tripod but only a couple of Sony Cyber-shot cameras—the DSC-WX1 and the DSC-TX1 (a limitation that's either an annoyance or a relief, depending on your point of view)—the Party-shot can swivel a full 360 degrees or tilt 24 degrees, all the better to scan the room for hapless partygoers.

Even better (or worse), the device is endowed with face-detection and Sony's "Smile Shutter" technology, which automatically hones in on faces in the crowd and snaps away when it detects a grin.

Even the hardiest partiers will have a tough time wearing out the AA battery-powered Party-shot, which can aim and snap for up to 11 hours (according to Sony, anyway) before running out of juice. Attach the included AC adapter, and your little personal photographer will fire away until the cows come home.

The good/bad news? The Party-shot can't automatically upload its photographic evidence to Facebook. Well, not yet, anyway.

Well, it actually could automatically update facebook using a wi-fi SD card. Problem solved, now go party.

Well this is not good news for those of us who don't like having our pics taken. I guess I better not show up for the party then. Seriously though this sounds like a good camera.

Agree with all these comments - I like the idea of counter - hackers, too. Pretty soon, though, you get the hacker variant of 'SPY VS SPY VS SPY VS ...' "THE ANSWER" isn't really clear, but we can hope someone or someones are working on it. The right to self-expression could come at a steep price indeed. It's hard to know where it would stop. During the post Iran election, I was looking for hackers within Iran - gummint types - to try to 'take down' TWITTER especially. Didn't happen - but stay tuned, it may well happen, in the not too distant future. BTW, Bella - the # of followers is shown on the top of your TWITTER homepage .
