Apple Event: $200 Price Cut for 8GB iPhone

If you've been sitting on the fence about snapping up an iPhone, now may be the time to strike. Apple just announced a $200 price drop on the 8GB iPhone, effective today.

The 8GB iPhone will now retail for $399, compared to the steep $599 premium that early adopters (myself included) shelled out on launch day. Meanwhile, the 4GB iPhone (which is no longer listed on the Apple Store) will go on sale for $299 "while supplies last." With rumors of a stripped-down, low-cost iPhone in the pipeline, it makes sense that Apple would see fit to phase out the 4GB iPhone (which hasn't sold nearly as well as its bigger 8GB brother).

Update: I originally reported that the 4GB iPhone would keep its $499 price tag, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense, given that the 8GB phone is just $399—and indeed, I was wrong. My bad.

And another update: Steve Jobs just posted an open letter on Apple's Web site, offering a $100 Apple Store credit to anyone who bought the iPhone at the original price. It's not quite $200 in cash, but it's something.

lets not be so quick to sheck out all this money.like stated earlier, its just a stupid phone.and something better always comes out.As for me, i can care less about keeping up with the jones'.When the price drops more in about a year or so under 200$, then maybe i'll consider it..

It's too bad americans can't find a better use for their hard earned money. God forbid we do something crazy like I don't know, feed the needy, find a way to cut costs for medication, education, and clean up the environment. Just a few ideas I figured I'd remind those obssessing over a phone that will be upgraded, completely replaced, and more costly in the next six months to a year. So as the world's issues continue to rise and soon clean air will have a cost, make sure if anything, you have an I-phone

Anyone who has common sense would never buy a technological gadget when it is brand new. Did you all know that the SUPER PHONE is coming out shortly? Guess who it's by? That's right. APPLE. Are you going to get ready and save your money to purchase this thing for whatever outrageous amount that they are going to try to gouge everyone for? Give me a break people. Don't be so quick to hop on something! BREATHE. As a smart person stated earlier, it is just a cell phone.

It is not about keeping up with the Jones. I bought it 'cos I never own an iPod and I hate surfing the net on my Samsung phone using mMode. It is just clumsy. But iPhone gave me all in one without carrying all another gadget. Surfing on the net is a piece of cake on the iphone and not have to worry about the amount of data to download since the $20 unlimited access takes care of it. The price is not bad for $59 with data. Most people are paying over $40 just for voice and don't use up all the minutes. I'm just happy with the iPhone and think those sitting on the sidelines should not wait. If you're already a Cingular customer, there is no cost to upgrade.

Why would you need all of that in a phone unless you are homeless?

I think that I will hold out a little longer. I know that price of the phones will come down once again, and before the next holidays - Thanksgiving and Xmas.

Those that are saying they got shafted or screwed need are only blowing in the wind, so to speak. First off we all have a right to choose whether or not to buy something. Apple didn't force anyone to buy their phones and none of their ads were misleading about what the product could do. It is unfortunate that Apple decided to lower the price after so many people purchased it at full price but that is their right to do so. I agree with buckwildn_kr that you should wait because the price will drop on new phones eventually. Being its been over 30 days since most people bought the new iPhone they cannot return it for a refund and then purchase it cheaper. Tuff break but thats the price you pay for being impatient with a new product.

This just in: Jobs Apologizes, Apple to Give iPhone Customers $100 Credit By BetaNews Staff, BetaNews September 6, 2007, 3:34 PM Responding to a large amount of negative feedback from existing iPhone customers who felt slighted by Apple's decision to lower the price by a third to $399, CEO Steve Jobs apologized Thursday and said the company will offer a $100 credit for purchases from Apple's retail store or online store. In an open letter to customers, Jobs said it was the right decision to lower the price because "now it will be affordable by even more customers" in time for the holiday season, adding that in the world of technology there will also be an upcoming price cut or product update. However, he acknowledged that Apple should have done a better job taking care of early adopters. "Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these," Jobs wrote. Details of the credit are still being worked out and will be announced on Apple's Web site next week.
