If you've been sitting on the fence about snapping up an iPhone, now may be the time to strike. Apple just announced a $200 price drop on the 8GB iPhone, effective today.
The 8GB iPhone will now retail for $399, compared to the steep $599 premium that early adopters (myself included) shelled out on launch day. Meanwhile, the 4GB iPhone (which is no longer listed on the Apple Store) will go on sale for $299 "while supplies last." With rumors of a stripped-down, low-cost iPhone in the pipeline, it makes sense that Apple would see fit to phase out the 4GB iPhone (which hasn't sold nearly as well as its bigger 8GB brother).
Update: I originally reported that the 4GB iPhone would keep its $499 price tag, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense, given that the 8GB phone is just $399—and indeed, I was wrong. My bad.
And another update: Steve Jobs just posted an open letter on Apple's Web site, offering a $100 Apple Store credit to anyone who bought the iPhone at the original price. It's not quite $200 in cash, but it's something.

Might want to wait..... Verizon is coming out with better version of the iphone (not called the iphone)at the end of September. Ya know, Alledgedly Verizon passed on the iphone, as it was too limited.
STILL NEEDS TO DROP SOME MORE
when it came out i so wanted it but know i don;t thing so!
im gonna get one im gonna get one!!!!! i just need about $375 (lol)
My Motorola SLVR has iTunes built in and has had for over a year. OK, so it has buttons. So has every Apple device since "Day 1". It is now "Day 2".
kewl
I think that it would still be a good idea to wait a few months until it has gone through some time variation. One thing that they don't mention in the orientation about the iPhone is the security it may have. I don't know if you remember when Bluetooth phones were having problems with security, well how about the iPhone, it seems more vulnerable since everyone is attracted to this new invention. So be patient and wait it out. Remember "patience is a virtue."
That was nice waht steve jobs did for those who bought the iphone before this price cut
Glad to see that Steve Jobs is trying to appease the customers. With the $100 credit I will be able to get my headset for (almost) free!!
I REALLY LIKE THIS PHONE ONLY THING IS I DON'T HAVE THE SERVICE I PREFER MY SPRINT DO YOU THINK THEY WILL EVER MAKE SOMETHING SIMILAR FOR SPRINT SERVICE!!
WHAT ABOUT INSURANCE NOW . CAN ANYBODY ANSWER THAT ONE.
wow, way for me as a 15 year old to work all summer saving up for the 4GB iphone just for the money to go down the drain. I love my phone to death, but its cheaper now :/
Couldn't they at least have given me a little more time to bask in the glory of my new phone before they decided to rub it in my face how much i paid for it!?!?!
No phone is worth $300+ - it's a phone not a computer. And what happens when the battery is completely dead and no way to charge it. It's not worth the money
Chill out. There's a rumor going on about upgraded model with faster internet connection. Sit tight and you'll might see even cheaper iPhone around Xmas...
Not yet I`m going to wait a few more months maybe longer.

Use the ipod you probably already have for music. Use the digital camera you probably already have for your important pics. Use the tv you probably already have for shows & movies (who wants to watch them on a 3 inch screen anyway?) Use the computer you probably already have for your internet (can't it wait 'til you get home?). And buy a PHONE for CALLS! I love gadgets as much as the next person but seriously, Ive got the same POS phone I've had for 3 years now & I don't feel the least bit inadequate for it. Save yourself the money & the hassle.
