It took long enough, but now it finally looks like owners of HD-capable TiVos will get to use TiVoToGo, the feature that lets you transfer recorded shows to your PC or handheld. Multi-room viewing will also be part of the package.
BetaNews reports that TiVoToGo, which was disabled in the
Series3 and
TiVo HD models due to—you guessed it—piracy concerns, should be available in November. It's great news for HD TiVo owners who have gone without TiVoToGo (which was never disabled for standard-definition Series2 units), but some questions still linger—especially when it comes to copy-protected HD shows.
According to a (confirmed) post by TiVo rep Bob Pony on the TiVo Community Forum, TiVoToGo won't allow the transfer of "copy-protected" programming to a PC. As BetaNews points out, the copy-protection flag is rarely (if ever) used for standard-def programming, but it could be more prevalent on HD shows—and that could put a serious damper on your HD TiVoToGo action. Guess we'll find out once the feature goes live.
Another problem, of course, is that HD shows take up much more space than standard-def programming—about four times as much, actually—and that means that transferring HD video over your Wi-Fi network could take a long, long time.
So, HD TiVo users—you excited about getting TiVoToGo back?
