I've been spending some quality time with the iPod Touch, the touch-screen, Wi-Fi iPod that's essentially the iPhone without the phone—and yes, it's thinner and lighter, and it lets you buy tunes wirelessly over iTunes, a killer feature if there ever was one. In my tests, however, the Touch hit some serious speed bumps on the road to greatness.

I think reviewers have to stop comparing it to the iphone. Its not an iphone. Its an ipod with a big screen, touch control, and a browser. I think of it this way...if you have big storage needs, and need to carry all of your media at all times, get the classic. For $299, you are getting the same storage as a nano, with a much bigger screen, a new interface, a wifi browser, and online itunes store. So in reality you are getting all of those extras for an additional $100. Not bad if you ask me...
The previous poster is correct. It is not an iPhone Ben. We all know. The silver, scratch-able back is common to most iPods, and though it is not a desirable feature, we should all come to expect it now. I like the iPhone, but I am unwilling to switch to AT&T, so this is for people like me. I'd rather have a Wi-Fi iPod with cool features and a separate phone for a good deal than have the iPhone for a lot more. However, I see the problem with the "negative effect". Judging by the pic provided, it looks annoying. I don't really watch movies on my video, but I was planning to on the Touch. This disturbs me, as I plan on buying one this week. I will make sure to test it though before I leave the Apple Store, lol. This is flash-based, has some of the qualities of the iPhone, and is a nice gagdet. So what if the iPhone is a better iPod and "PDA" than the Touch? The Touch is officially known as an iPod, so it's duty is to function as an iPod with a few extra features. So lets not beat it down. Think of it as the iPhone's little brother who is still trying to get an A in science class. There are two local Apple Stores in my area, and both have been selling out of the Touch constantly. Not once until now have I heard about the negative effect and other let-downs. Apple is still a good company though. I had one on hold for two hours, was leaving after an hour to go buy it, but I called and they had apparently lost it. Guess what? I get one as soon as they restock for 10% off. $40.00 more in my pocket to spend on my Mac. Apple will fix any problems with it because they're not afraid to be consumer friendly.
I left my ipod touch in standby mode with the music off and WIFI on overnight but it drained the battery completely overnight. Anybody else seen this problem?
Hey Ben, check out the new video on CNET for the Touch. The editor, Donald Bell, says that the video quality was great, so this problem is probably either a specific hardware issue or firmware issue. Maybe the files are messed up, though that's doubtful. http://reviews.cnet.com/portable-video-players-pvps/apple-ipod-touch-16gb/4505-6499_7-32595956.html?tag=bubbl_2 I saw a clip of it playing videos, and it looked much better than the pic above. Like I said, it may not be this way for all models. It's a great product; just a few pieces of hardware need a bit of fine tuning. Overall, it's awesome, so lets not beat it down.

I hate the shiny back cover that the iPods have - too scratch prone. Look at the 2 gen Nano; I've dropped my, crushed it, and otherwise abused it far too much... guess what, no scratches. theres a nick or two, and a dent on one of the edges but it still looks fine. compared to my friends Video iPod it looks new. and hers IS -relatively- new.
