"Small Number" of iPod Touch Screens Faulty

Apple has admitted that a "small number" of the screens on its new iPod Touch have trouble displaying dark images. Now let's see if Cupertino takes the next step and replaces the glitchy Touches free of charge.

In his review of the Touch, Wall Street Journal tech guru Walt Mossberg notes that some "early" units of the Touch (although not his pair of review units, apparently) suffered from faulty screens; indeed, I could barely make out the dark scenes in "The Hunt for Red October" on my test Touch, and several other reviewers have pointed out the problem as well. Mossberg reports that Apple has admitted to the problems, adding that only a "small number of units" were affected and that the issue is "being remedied."

I'm glad to see that Apple has owned up to the Touch's bum screen (or at least, to the "small number" of Touches with faulty LCDs). Of course, I'd be even happier if Apple offered to replace the defective iPods for free. If you happen to be one of the unlucky few (that is, assuming the "small number" figure is correct), call Apple customer support, read the excerpt from the Mossberg review and demand a replacement; hopefully, they'll oblige.

That's what the 'in-the-now', 'trendy', 'cool', dumbass people get for even having purchased an iPod Touch. It's a worthless product... Buy the iPhone or buy an iPod 'Classic'.

2 years ago when I was living in Japan, the phones there were more advanced than the Iphone... Mine even had the rotating view screen that everyone swears Apple came up with. I think Apple is a company that cares nothing of its costomers. (Which is why I'll never buy one of it's products!)

Of course they are going to replace all of them for free, like it was mentioned, all new Apple products come with a standard one year warranty. I really don't understand the importance of this article at all, and certainly not the negative tone of it, every new product has issues, and certainly Apple is still far above average in the customer service dpartment. Also for those who complain about the iPhone, the only real complaint about it is the price drop, which last time I checked has absolutely nothing to do with the actual functionality of it, so I don't really understand what there is to talk about.

That's why their products lead the market loser. Go play with your Microsoft touch product. Oh that's right they don't have one.

Tone of this piece is a real cheap shot. Apple has owned up to defects in the past and has always made it right for customers -- sometimes even in cases where it didn't believe it was wrong. The author of the piece is a typical Apple basher.

since they r so expensive, they should be replaced for free. whoever bought them deserves that much.

Apple is a great company and has a history of excellent product and coustomer satisfaction. I am a touch owner and the problem ( which is being made such a big issue ) is that low resolution dark images are not displayed very clearly or more rather as clear as the other images. Apple is just going through a bad phase and I am sure it will work this problem out. Steve Jobs is a great innovator!

I have already had problems with the Ipod and Itunes that I have purchased, so I surely would not buy another one of their products anyway.

There's always something wrong with new products. It's not just Apple, everyone. I only hope they do more than own up to this, though. Their customers deserve a replacement. It would be a smart move on Apple's part.
