"Small Number" of iPod Touch Screens Faulty

Apple has admitted that a "small number" of the screens on its new iPod Touch have trouble displaying dark images. Now let's see if Cupertino takes the next step and replaces the glitchy Touches free of charge.

In his review of the Touch, Wall Street Journal tech guru Walt Mossberg notes that some "early" units of the Touch (although not his pair of review units, apparently) suffered from faulty screens; indeed, I could barely make out the dark scenes in "The Hunt for Red October" on my test Touch, and several other reviewers have pointed out the problem as well. Mossberg reports that Apple has admitted to the problems, adding that only a "small number of units" were affected and that the issue is "being remedied."

I'm glad to see that Apple has owned up to the Touch's bum screen (or at least, to the "small number" of Touches with faulty LCDs). Of course, I'd be even happier if Apple offered to replace the defective iPods for free. If you happen to be one of the unlucky few (that is, assuming the "small number" figure is correct), call Apple customer support, read the excerpt from the Mossberg review and demand a replacement; hopefully, they'll oblige.

I warned my friend not to buy an iphone right away, but he couldn't wait to have it. I told him the prices would drop and he said that was impossible. I hate to say it, but... "I told you!" My BIG question or curiosity... Will Mac allow Verizon to sell their product??? I am not a fan of At&t (sorry).

Yeah, I'm not sure why they *wouldn't* replace a defective product.

Why wouldn't they replace it for free?? Doesn't it have a standard warranty with it? The Touch isn't even 2 months old!

You know, the Iphones have the same issue. Screens with serial numbers starting the the number 7 have been prone to go dark. I don't trust Apple. Any company that can shaft so many customers with the Iphone price drop, and then call them "crybabies" for complaining about it is a shady corporation that I want nothing to do with.

Thanks, after hearing of all the issues that have sorrounded the iPhone and iTouch, I think I'll stick with my Kyocera Strobe and Sansa mp3 player, they work just fine.

" Now let's see if Cupertino takes the next step and replaces the glitchy Touches free of charge." What is that supposed to mean? It sounds like you don't think Apple will honor it's warrantee. I do agree with the rule of "waiting a bit" before buying a new technology.

How is this not apple's fault? I think people have been fooled by the Mac Vs PC commercials. Apple is flawed, just like pretty much all other tech companies.

I love Apple products and think the technology is innovative. I do not fall into the group of "innovators", the people who get the newest technology the minute it's released to market. I just hate the idea of having to upgrade my equipment so fast. I will wait until the industry proves it's solid before I'll get it. But get it I will. I love what Apple comes up with and I hope they keep it up.

hate is such a strong word. learn to love and embrace new products. of course there will be issues at first but eventually it gets better. just like how everything works with technology.

Cutting edge technology is often painful.

Why does this article have such a negative tone? Apple said they are working on a remedy. Give them time. It's not like other new products don't have problems in the beginning... Sounds like everyone just wants Apple to fail. If it wasn't for them the envelope would take a lot longer to get pushed.
