"Small Number" of iPod Touch Screens Faulty

Apple has admitted that a "small number" of the screens on its new iPod Touch have trouble displaying dark images. Now let's see if Cupertino takes the next step and replaces the glitchy Touches free of charge.

In his review of the Touch, Wall Street Journal tech guru Walt Mossberg notes that some "early" units of the Touch (although not his pair of review units, apparently) suffered from faulty screens; indeed, I could barely make out the dark scenes in "The Hunt for Red October" on my test Touch, and several other reviewers have pointed out the problem as well. Mossberg reports that Apple has admitted to the problems, adding that only a "small number of units" were affected and that the issue is "being remedied."

I'm glad to see that Apple has owned up to the Touch's bum screen (or at least, to the "small number" of Touches with faulty LCDs). Of course, I'd be even happier if Apple offered to replace the defective iPods for free. If you happen to be one of the unlucky few (that is, assuming the "small number" figure is correct), call Apple customer support, read the excerpt from the Mossberg review and demand a replacement; hopefully, they'll oblige.

This doesn't mean that ALL tech products are faulty. I bought my Wii last year a week after they came out, and it's never given me trouble. Though I did manage to get my nearby Apple Store to place a newer iPod Touch on hold when their new shipment arrives, and I can swap out my old one.

People were stupid for jumping to buy it the day it was available to buy the Iphone. Never buy anything that is just out on the market, wait and see if people start complaining about it...Be smart save your money..it's really a piece of junk. This thing isn't going to last too long. Then you know Apple people are not going to help you. No matter how much you paid for it you're still going to have to fork over the money to get anything fix. They knew there were glitches on the Iphone and they didn't care they were out to make big bucks off something that prolly only cost them $50.00 to make..! I knew there was bound to be something to go wrong with the Iphone! You people overly paid for that Iphone. I'm glad I didn't buy it. Be Be smart stop making them so rich...!

No reason to report abuse, but can I report idiocy on delumpcious5600? He made more spelling and grammar mistakes in his post than correct ones. I don't have an iPhone, by choice, but I suspect you can't afford one. No way anyone in THEIR right mind would hire you.

my friend should be happy about this, he's totally anti-apple. but apple really needs to get better and not put out defective products within the first week.

Ditto to matt & somebodyshere --My dad taught me that as a child, never buy electronics and especially vehicles when they are 1st released. He said with electronics wait about 6 mths to a year and new car types wait a year. The people who rush the 1st year to buy new products are just the manufacturers test monkeys.

I agree with the person that said "all tech companies are flawed", I have been disappointed in the apple customer support, and service, having come over to the camp from IBM/Dell. As a consumer, I have had both, and feel apple service is not as good as Dell. As a corporation though, Apple is no better than any other. I blame it on WalMart. They started the trend of moving manufacturing offshore, and SO MANY US companies have followed suit, and many of them at the direction of WalMart. Shoddy cheap chinese merchandise is fine if you are buying based solely on price. Apple on the other hand commands a premium price for their products, and should not offshore to a Country that can't even effectively monitor lead levels in paint put on children's toys.

I think AMericans are so easily fooled by the media. A few Apple commercials and a few Steve Jobs appearance and suddenly they think Apple has the best tech in the world. Truth is They subcontracted to many foreign companies to design and make the apple products. Thats why they have so many inconsistency, its all done by separate manufacturers. And Americans, listen to me, the iPhone is nothing new. Asia particularly Japan has been using similar products YEARS AGO!

Apple "admits" - why imply that there was some devious intent involved by using the term "admits" and "owned up to"?
