Yep, it's official: the Motorola-made Sidekick Slide is coming to a T-Mobile store near you. Also on its way is the Sidekick LX, a streamlined update of the Sidekick 3 with a sharper screen and revamped interface. I got to take a peek at both phones last week; here are a few quick first impressions.

First, let's take the case of the LX, which will take the place of the SK3 as the flagship Sidekick. Set to go on sale October 24 for $300 with a two-year contract, the LX is slightly slimmer and flatter than the bulky 3 (which was, in turn, a bit more trim than the Sidekick II), although at 5.7 ounces, the LX isn't exactly light. The controls are pretty much the same—there's a speaker/navigation pad to the left of the swivel-up screen, and a trackball to the right, along with the Sidekick's traditional "jump," next, and menu keys. Speaking of the three-inch, 65,000-color screen—it's much better this time around, boasting an improved resolution of 400 by 240 pixels, plus LCD technology borrowed from Sharp's Aquos line, and a slick, updated interface. Happily, the fundamentals of the innovative Sidekick UI are still there (although the annoying, cartoon-like figures have been thoughtfully jettisoned).

Under the hood, though, the LX isn't much different from its predecessor. Besides the improved screen, the LX is still saddled with a 1.3-megapixel camera (c'mon, guys—would two megapixels have killed you?), a music-only player (no video?), Bluetooth (no stereo support), and EDGE-only data access—no Wi-Fi (or @Home support, for that matter). That said, the Sidekick's robust e-mail client, instant messaging apps, and Web browser are still on board, along with microSD memory expansion, quad-band GSM for worldwide calling, and T-Mobile's new MySpace application.

Now let's move on to the Slide, a Motorola-built handset (as opposed to Sharp, which made the earlier Sidekicks) designed to appeal to "a new customer," as T-Mobile reps told me: in short, adults. At 0.7 inches thick and 5.3 ounces, the Slide is lighter and more compact than the LX, and it drops the kid-friendly "mood lights" on the pricier model. The Slide ($199 with a two-year contract, available November 7) also has a slide-up screen, compared to the signature swiveling display on earlier Sidekicks, and its QWERTY keypad will feel cramped to those used to the roomy Sidekick keyboards of old. However, the Slide actually fits in a jeans pocket with room to spare.

The Slide crams in most of the LX's features, with a few notable exceptions. You get the Sidekick Web browser, instant messaging, and e-mail client (although no Exchange support, which would certainly have appealed to adults), plus a 1.3-megapixel camera, quad-band GSM calling, EDGE data, and the revamped screen (320 by 240 pixels, minus the Aquos circuity). There's no stereo Bluetooth support, through, and the Slide won't ship with a microSD card like the LX will (you'll need a memory card to fire up the Slide's music player).

Anyway, I should be getting review units of the LX and the Slide in the near future, so I'll reserve final judgements until I've taken a closer look.

Update: In my original post, I mistakenly reported that the LX comes with stereo Bluetooth support; I got that info from a draft spec sheet, which has since been corrected. Sorry for the mix-up.

I must agree with vanwes, 2 years is too long of a commitment for something that lacks videos, wi fi, internet, etc. I dont think it is worth it especially since Tmobile has horrible signal performance, trust me I know, I ve been a Tmobile customer for about 4 yrs. Why do I stay with them? Because they are the only company right now that offer the most minutes for the money. I guess you get what you pay for.

you would think with the screen size it would be ideal for at least video messaging.

Do the new version have better charging?? We've had our sidekick threes replace at lease 5 times each because of the problems with charging. Since these are Motorola I'm hoping they're going to actually be able to recharge for more than a few weeks before they break. Any news you have on this will be a great help before I waste more money on a product like the sidekick 3.

you are wrong. t-mobile has great phone. the sidekick 3 and sidekick id are great phones. I have cingular now and do not like it at all. i have had nothing but problems with them. when ever some one leaves me a message i will get it about a day later. they din't have any good phones also. if you are looking for a good phone you might want to get a verizon env or a t-mobile sidekick 1d or sidekick 3.

I have been using Sidekick since the II Model and to be honest, I do not see the hype of this phone. I upgraded to the III only because I was told by the Rep that the technical portion of the phone was better...yeah, right. The battery life is poor, no video and on top of all of that no picture text message!! The Danger Server seems to encounter a great deal of technical problems...I personally am going to look into another phone altogether as oppose to getting excited about the LX.

If 3G wireless is actually available in some areas of the United States, why aren't we producing phones that are accomodating? For example, the i-mate jasjar. Now THAT is a phone worth buying.

No video?? Can't you basically watch TV on any of these phones, for a fee of course?

The Helio Ocean has all those features and more. It has 3G, 2MP camera, QWERTY keyboard/number pad, and unlimited text messaging around the world with the all in plan. The internet is extremely fast and the phone is very good quality. Only downfall to it is that its runs on a CDMA network.

i dont really like how it looks and it sucks that it doesn't flip=(

No stereo bluetooth support?! Is this detail true? What the heck so it's the same crappy music player from the SK3? Means you cant use the bluetooth music headsets (gotta wear the dumb wired headphones). It wouldnt have killed them to make the camera a little better. Way to go to screw another Sidekick over

and yes...Helio Ocean is now better than the Sidekick lineup now. LX had its chance but they want to cheap out on streaming media and a good camera

I'm definetly into the whol thing about the Sidekick Slide. The color scheme and all . Plus, the slide up screen instead of swiveling . Def. Coping It !

I had the sidekick 1, 2 & 3. I currently have the sidekick Lx, I recieved my phone last Thursday through t-moblie. I love my phone! I love the sidekick period. Yes you can access Myspace on the phone, there is an icon there. But its free until Decemeber. Then it will be $1.99 a month. There are somethings not avaiable on the Lx, that were on the sidekick 3. ( Like the IP-Relay, Aol mail, etc.) Hopefully they will upgrade the system. They have added a new feature. You are able to do picture messages now. Over all, I love the phone! Also, things you have downloaded, you are unable to restore to the LX.

after havin the sk2 and now the sk3 im startn to hate tmobile!! they never have any service and the sk's are all pretty much the same!! c'mon now y couldnt they have added video?? and then its like i jus payed 399 last yr for my sk3 when it released and renewed my plan.. now im supposed to pay another 300 and renew my plan AGAIN?? for the EXACT same thing my fone already has [minus the myspace feature] its not worth it.. especially since no one is even on myspace anymore becuz the hype of that has died.. id rather spend my money on the iphone or hold out and wait for something else touch screen with REAL internet and video and picture text messaging. as much as i love aim [which is the only reason i am havn a hard time letting go of my kick] its time for a real upgrade!!! i wish the iphone had aim as awesome as sk's...
