So it's finally official: the new Zunes are coming in November, and as expected, we'll have three versions: 4GB and 8GB flash-based players, and an 80GB hard drive version that's slightly slimmer than the first 30GB Zune. Also new: a revamped Marketplace with DRM-free tunes, wireless syncing of your music and podcasts (now that's cool), and automatic transfers of recorded shows from Windows Media Center.

First, let's take a quick look at the hardware. The two flash players are roughly the size of the iPod Nano, with the 4GB player going for $150 and the 8GB for $200 (same price as the new Nanos). The flash Zunes will be available in November in four colors: pink, green, black, and red. Meanwhile, the 80GB hard-drive Zune will come in a single color—black—for $250, and it'll feature a 3.2-inch screen and a touch-sensitive "Zune Pad," good for clicking or "brushing" your way to your music.

Of course, all three of the new Zunes come with Wi-Fi, but while you still can't buy tunes over the air as you can with the iPod Touch or the iPhone, you will be able to sync your music and podcasts wirelessly, over your home Wi-Fi network—very cool, and a feature that's still missing from the latest iPods. (The wireless sync feature will also be available on the 30GB Zune come November.) Microsoft has also improved on the Zune's song-sharing features: you can now share tunes with your buddies without an expiration date, and you can even hand off songs that someone else shared with you; nice, but you'll only be able to play a shared song three times—not ideal, but much better than before.

Moving on: Microsoft has apparently revamped the Zune Marketplace from top to bottom. Music videos are now available, and while there aren't any movies on the service, you will find about a million DRM-free songs (no word on pricing, or whether the DRM-free tunes come from major labels). Also on tap is a beta of Zune Social, a MySpace-type community site that'll let you create a Zune Card—a widget along the lines of an Xbox Gamercard that automatically tracks your favorite music—add friends, and share music recommendations. Hmmm.

My initial reaction to it all is...mixed. The new hardware isn't what I'd call earth-shattering, but the wireless syncing feature is enticing—and I'm always in favor of more DRM-free music. In any event, I'm reserving any final judgement until I've seen the new Zunes in action.

I'll probably buy the Zune 80g. Also, how come you never hear the media talk about Ipod batteries dying? Everyone I know who has had an Ipod has had its battery crap out & have to buy another for $60. The itouch is slick but only 16g.

After a good deal of research, my daughter (a FIRM Apple/Mac person) bought me a Zune so I could download books-on-tape from our local library. The Apple ipod player is restricted. The player HAD to be PC compatible. Well, the Zune, although developed by Microsoft, WILL NOT ALLOW DOWNLOADS, always yielding a message that I am attempting to download an illegal document! The tech head here in Greensboro has done everything to find a way around the problem, but says that this is true for all libraries that pay for download access through the national book download subscriber service. What was MS thinking??????

Why are people bashing on IPOD or bashing on Zune??? Must be bored I guess. There's going to be lovers, there's going to be haters, but if hating on the Zune is all you do then maybe you should get a life. WE GET IT ALREADY, YOU HATE MS-WHO CARES. God, I've never seen so many people waste their time bashing a product. If you don't like it then state your opinion and leave, or just leave period. I like the IPOD, but I can't wait to try the Zune. Yes I am an equal opportunity gagit lover :-)

Wow after the new iPods came out, this feels a day late and a dollar short.

Yeah but no one wants to pay all that money for an iphone with no phone. thats all the ipod touch is. the zune is better because it is cheaper as wireless syncing.

They're going to be releasing the new firmware for the original Zune, which will include the wireless syncing, and more of the newer features. Mid-November, so you can still enjoy the new features without going out and buying a new Zune. And if there's going to be any comparison of Microsoft and Apple, then do it right, compare the products in the order in which they were created, Classic iPod & Original Zune. And you can't really say that Microsoft is just copying Apple, because you would have to say that of every MP3 Player Maker on Earth. If I am wrong about that, then what you are telling us is that Ford should be the only car company allowed to make cars. You would also be saying that ALL other Makes and Models of Cars are inferior. So a Model-T would beat a Mitsubishi Galant? I think Apple Computers have a place in society, but what I think is pathetic is that Apple has now become a religon, and whoever owns the most Apple products will achieve eternal life. Think for yourselves, wake up and stop being a follower. Interesting, not once throughout that entire rant did I ever say Apple or Microsoft had the better product. ;)

Being an Apple fan, it's great to see the shoe on the other foot. Usually, the majority posting are Apple bashers. It seems the other way around now (at least in this forum). Maybe Apple is finally making inroads on getting the confused majority to see that they make a better product and are great in making original new products. Something others try to copy, but fail. I've seen quite a few people switch from Windows to Mac, but not the other way around. Keep it up Apple!

FM??? Who listens to FM? Why is that an issue, anyways there are Fm add on devices for the iPod if one must really have that. Apple also sells DRM free songs. The iPod touch totally rocks!

I've had my ZUNE for about 3 months, I love it!! I watch the issues that my 3 kids have with their Ipods and the fact that even my kids, all in their early 20's and late teens, want one is pretty cool. I think it's easy to use and FM kind of cool to have once in awhile. I will be buying an 80GB. I sort of bought mine out of rebellion too. It's nice to have something different. I just hope they come out with more home players to connect too. Way to go Zune.

And then we have a lot of people saying Microsoft copies everything that Apple does or Microsoft just goes out and buys a company or product because they can't develop something on their own, well what about the fact that Apple tried to come up with a new operating system, but failed, so they ended up purchasing NeXT in 1997, and then a few years later OSX appears. Have you ever seen NeXT? It looks just lke OSX with different cosmetics. Or then other would say Microsoft took so long to come out with Vista. Well, when is Apple going to come out with a newer version of it's OS? It's like your grandchildren are going to be purchasing OSX 10.7.01.9. It seems as if OSX will never evolve. So Companies, whether it be Apple or Microsoft have to do what they have to do, it's just a part of business, it's just the way the world works. You can either accept that fact or get rid of your electronics. Hey wait a minute, the first Machintosh came out in 1984, but the Commodore came out in 1982, so that was the first home computer, not the Mac.

Heyivegotms- Awesome post. And everything you said was true. Thanks for setting things straight...and reminding all these apple fans that not everything has been copied from them. It's time for them guys to stop being so full of themselves. "Hey wait a minute, the first Machintosh came out in 1984, but the Commodore came out in 1982, so that was the first home computer, not the Mac." ALL I HAVE TO SAY TO THAT IS BOOYAH!

I work for apple and I own a ZUNE and most flavors of ipod. I love the ZUNE more than my ipods. The Zune rocks, especially if you have and xbox 360, full integration, baby!!!!!

What generation is the ipod on now? Dont forget that the zune is in second gen. It has already brought features to the table no other mp3 player has yet to bring, and it will continue to do so.

  • 161 Posted by cee_em_36 on Thu Sep 3, 2009 3:20PM EDT Report Abuse

I've had a third gen ipod and a first gen zune the day it came out.. The ipod was good until it broke itself while playing. It just stopped and I didn;t even drop it or hit it. Of course apple gave me a new one but that incident just made me give up on apple all together. Such a poor quality player. The zune however has not given me any problems whatsoever and watching videos on it is awesome. The quality differs by how you convert the video but compared to watching it on a ipod, zune is just better. The fact that zune hasn't given me problems makes me put my vote on it.
