MS Unveils New Zunes, Wireless Syncing

So it's finally official: the new Zunes are coming in November, and as expected, we'll have three versions: 4GB and 8GB flash-based players, and an 80GB hard drive version that's slightly slimmer than the first 30GB Zune. Also new: a revamped Marketplace with DRM-free tunes, wireless syncing of your music and podcasts (now that's cool), and automatic transfers of recorded shows from Windows Media Center.

First, let's take a quick look at the hardware. The two flash players are roughly the size of the iPod Nano, with the 4GB player going for $150 and the 8GB for $200 (same price as the new Nanos). The flash Zunes will be available in November in four colors: pink, green, black, and red. Meanwhile, the 80GB hard-drive Zune will come in a single color—black—for $250, and it'll feature a 3.2-inch screen and a touch-sensitive "Zune Pad," good for clicking or "brushing" your way to your music.

Of course, all three of the new Zunes come with Wi-Fi, but while you still can't buy tunes over the air as you can with the iPod Touch or the iPhone, you will be able to sync your music and podcasts wirelessly, over your home Wi-Fi network—very cool, and a feature that's still missing from the latest iPods. (The wireless sync feature will also be available on the 30GB Zune come November.) Microsoft has also improved on the Zune's song-sharing features: you can now share tunes with your buddies without an expiration date, and you can even hand off songs that someone else shared with you; nice, but you'll only be able to play a shared song three times—not ideal, but much better than before.

Moving on: Microsoft has apparently revamped the Zune Marketplace from top to bottom. Music videos are now available, and while there aren't any movies on the service, you will find about a million DRM-free songs (no word on pricing, or whether the DRM-free tunes come from major labels). Also on tap is a beta of Zune Social, a MySpace-type community site that'll let you create a Zune Card—a widget along the lines of an Xbox Gamercard that automatically tracks your favorite music—add friends, and share music recommendations. Hmmm.

My initial reaction to it all is...mixed. The new hardware isn't what I'd call earth-shattering, but the wireless syncing feature is enticing—and I'm always in favor of more DRM-free music. In any event, I'm reserving any final judgement until I've seen the new Zunes in action.

Its a failure! Anything less than an IPOD killer must be considered a failure by Microsoft. After all, they didn't get into this market to compete with RCA, Sandisk, Dell, and others did they? They need touch screen and better interface. The new album scolling feature in new ipods is way cool. The web browser is not perfect but better than anything anybody else has to offer - MP3 player or cell phone included! Microsoft is still playing catch-up and it hardl gained any ground with this.

I have the old zune and the new ipod Touch and i have to say even with the new improvements on the Zune the ipod Touch is better. You can go on youtube and internet while with the zune you can not. Plus the ipod Touch is touch screen. Get the ipod Touch then the zune!

Yeah i agree the touch is impressive but like 3 said, itunes is a lot to deal with. The wireless sync i mean come on. I myself have a 30 g. zune. I've never thought anything was missing from it. It's a video/music player. Not to mention 80 G's..the touch only has 8...Not much storage space if you ask me. If i had the touch i would have to choose my music more carefully. With a une i have everything i want or don't want in the palm of my hand.

big deal .zune is still not as good as an ipod.the reason the ipod does not have f.m radio is why would u want to listen to comerical radio when u have acess to all the media that i tunes has to offer.as usual microsoft is playing catchup, they should stick to doing one thing well ,and not do everything poorly

Once again, Microsoft RIPS OFF Apple. Bill Gates has made a career doing this.

At least the article no longer says "iPod Killer." The new term now is "iPod Beeyatch"

    # 10 too bad, you never learned to use your Ipod the right way. I move music from one station to another (even a crappy PC YUK) with out a problem. Microsoft has no imagination, they can never create a product just copy or buy it out (sell out Bungie).

Evidently, Apple's website is blocked from the Microsoft campus. - Touch has WiFi and a browser, and can download music from iTMS -camera? irrelevant? Zune has none either. Who wants one anyway? -"Deal with iTunes"?? ummm ...that's a Free program to anyone, mac or PC. Useful even if you don't ever buy a song from iTMS. RIP all your CDs to AAC or MP3 if you wish. Use coverflow. Open an account for free, and get all the artwork for your albums for FREE. (if they have the song). Also, there are free songs all the time. I got "You Know I'm No Good" from Amy Winehouse, for FREE from iTMS. So yeah! They are a pain in the arse alright! So hard to deal with!

The pricing doesn't make sense. $200 bucks for an 8GB one, and just add $50 for an 80GB zune? That's 50 bucks more for 10 times the amount of Space....I feel sorry for all those that DO buy the 8 GB version of this.

I have the first zune and I LOVE IT! i had apple before but i had WAYY to many problems with Apple.. and the feature of transferring songs from your zune to your computer is something i LOVE since apple doesnt do that O.o since the article says that the new zune is about the size of a nano.. thats a lot better than the big one right now but the size doesnt bother me its harder to lose :] the let down is that the smaller ones have smaller gigs..but i havent even filled up the 30 gig one but other than that I CANT WAIT TILL THEY COME OUT :] im excited now

I have one question: Can it be used like a portable external hard drive so that I can easily port my music to another computer? If so, that in itself makes it more valuable than iPod.
