So it's finally official: the new Zunes are coming in November, and as expected, we'll have three versions: 4GB and 8GB flash-based players, and an 80GB hard drive version that's slightly slimmer than the first 30GB Zune. Also new: a revamped Marketplace with DRM-free tunes, wireless syncing of your music and podcasts (now that's cool), and automatic transfers of recorded shows from Windows Media Center.

First, let's take a quick look at the hardware. The two flash players are roughly the size of the iPod Nano, with the 4GB player going for $150 and the 8GB for $200 (same price as the new Nanos). The flash Zunes will be available in November in four colors: pink, green, black, and red. Meanwhile, the 80GB hard-drive Zune will come in a single color—black—for $250, and it'll feature a 3.2-inch screen and a touch-sensitive "Zune Pad," good for clicking or "brushing" your way to your music.

Of course, all three of the new Zunes come with Wi-Fi, but while you still can't buy tunes over the air as you can with the iPod Touch or the iPhone, you will be able to sync your music and podcasts wirelessly, over your home Wi-Fi network—very cool, and a feature that's still missing from the latest iPods. (The wireless sync feature will also be available on the 30GB Zune come November.) Microsoft has also improved on the Zune's song-sharing features: you can now share tunes with your buddies without an expiration date, and you can even hand off songs that someone else shared with you; nice, but you'll only be able to play a shared song three times—not ideal, but much better than before.

Moving on: Microsoft has apparently revamped the Zune Marketplace from top to bottom. Music videos are now available, and while there aren't any movies on the service, you will find about a million DRM-free songs (no word on pricing, or whether the DRM-free tunes come from major labels). Also on tap is a beta of Zune Social, a MySpace-type community site that'll let you create a Zune Card—a widget along the lines of an Xbox Gamercard that automatically tracks your favorite music—add friends, and share music recommendations. Hmmm.

My initial reaction to it all is...mixed. The new hardware isn't what I'd call earth-shattering, but the wireless syncing feature is enticing—and I'm always in favor of more DRM-free music. In any event, I'm reserving any final judgement until I've seen the new Zunes in action.

Who ever design this Zune should get fire. You try to compete against Apple and you just copy axactly the same design languge that ipod have? If you make it better, no problem, but this Zune look nothing compare to the new ipod.

I had an iPod, I hated it. I have a Zune now, and I love it. You get more bang for your buck. Also, it is my understanding that a firmware upgrade will allow current 30gb Zunes to be able to receive music wirelessly from your wireless network at home. Love my Zune, it's great for roadtrips. I can put 20gb of music on it and still have room for 2 or three DVD movies.

more corrections: - Touch comes in 8 Gig AND 16 Gig, but if you all want to be "size queens" these days, get an iPod classic in 80 Gig or 160 freekin gig! - something like 500 million downloads of iTunes, downloaded for free, PC or Mac. Useful if only to transfer your CDs to your computer, via AAC format ONLY. No, just kidding dopes. You can also use grandpop's MP3 format if you don't like the AAC format they use in DVDs. After reading "I won't have to deal with iTunes" 10 times here, with no reason behind it, I'm just scratching my head! Complain to Apple! They'll even give you your money back for iTunes! hahaha!

Hey colin_combrink... You DON'T have to deal with iTunes to use an iPod. That's a myth. I can use WinAmp with my iPod if I so wanted to. But my entire media Library is in iTunes which I happen to love. I've also got Windows Media Player 11 and Zune Player. I'll say this about the Zune. It's got a nice feel to it. I've toyed with the thought of getting one. I've used them before. I can't get past the cheap feel of it though. I think this may be a good move for Microsoft but it could also be a bad one. They are aiming to directly compete with the iPod now. Thats clear. I think however I'm still going to get an iPod over a Zune. I don't see much of a future for the Zune. It could be a serious security risk to your Windows computers. That thought alone is scary to think about. We shall see though. I'll play with these when they come out. I've already played with all the iPods and I like them. That's me though. Also the Zune I used was slow to respond to my commands. I want quick access to my files. Not slow.

i think microsoft and apple are at war, apple is winning. I say this because apple releases new ipods, microsoft makes new zunes. Apple has i wifi ipod with a touch screen, microsoft makes a zune with wifi and a semi touch screen. You can see the same thing in operating systems. Apple makes something, microsoft copies and lowers. Lowers as in wifi in both but full browser in ipod, widgets in both but full program in apple, touch screen in both but semi touch screen in zune. Microsoft might make a phone now but with no touch screen. Who knows?

You can upgrade a first gen Zune to accomedate 100 gig. and for the touch ipod, it won't be worth the money til the 3rd gen. 16 gig won't even hold all my music let alone a movie or two.
